Mike Mercury (born May 24, 1965) in an American stand-up comedian of Norwegian descent.

Early Life

Mike Mercury was born in Richland Center, WI and raised by his parents, Charles and Barbara along with his 5 siblings. His father, Chuck, was a TV weatherman and radio DJ for most of his professional career, and his mother stayed home to raise the childrens.

Mike's family moved to West Middleton, WI. Mike discovered a love for performing in the 5th grade thanks to a creative arts class at West Middleton Elementary School. He and his best friend, Doug Pray, now a documentary filmmaker, editor and director, produced skits every Friday that they performed for the class.

At the tender age of 10 Mike wrote and directed the school's Christmas play; a rather grim tale about Santa Claus being hijacked on an airplane and the subsequent cancellation of that joyous holiday.

In seventh grade he won his middle school’s coveted “Actor Of The Year” award for his work in several stage productions, upsetting the heavily favored eighth grader, Scott Herkert, who went on to a successful career in residential construction.

In High School, shunned by a narrow-minded and elitist theater department, Mike concentrated on music: drums and percussion in band, and the kazoo in the back row of geometry class. In his senior year, he got an “F” in bowling because it was spring, he was in love and he never showed up.

After High School, Mike auditioned for a play with Strollers Theater company and was given the lead role. He knew then that the math teacher who oversaw his high school's theater department was running a crooked game and he vowed revenge.

Career

Mike dropped out of the University of Wisconsin – Madison where he had been studying the phenomenon of ineffectual teachers running extracurricular programs in public schools. This research took place mostly at a bar called The Pub on Madison's State St.

In 1983, Mike moved to Los Angeles, CA to pursue his dreams of co-starring with Meg Ryan in anything. (Mike had very specific dreams.)

Shortly after arriving in Los Angeles, Mike joined an improvisational training and performance school called “L.A. Connection" where he spent the next year learning and performing improv comedy. He convinced some of his friends to form their own improv group, which they called "High Adventure."

After passing an audition for the iconic owner of LA's famed Comedy Store, Mitzi Shore, they quickly became a favorite act there, appearing weekly (and sometimes weakly) alongside some of the great stand-ups of the time like Louie Anderson, Robin Williams, Roseanne Barr, Sam Kinison and Andrew “Dice” Clay, just to namedrop a few.

In 1985, Mike landed his first film job as a Production Assistant on Three Amigos. Being a production assistant is not the same as being a featured actor so while the experience was educational, it was pretty sucky.

In the spring of 1988 the Writers' strike virtually shut down the entire industry and Mike was laid off at his job as a Production Assistant from the not-even-close-to-being-a-hit Disney show, “Videopolis.” Broke, bitter and craving cheese, Mike returned home to America’s Dairyland.

In the fall of 1988, Mike was hired as the house emcee at the Piccadilly Comedy Pub in the Concourse Hotel in Madison, WI. Mike has been performing stand-up comedy ever since. He went on to become a popular headliner at comedy clubs around the US and was a regular performer in Las Vegas. In 2000, Mike transitioned into the corporate market where he still performs stand-up comedy and emcees awards banquets.

Mike co-hosted a TV show called Hot Tonight, which aired on WMSN Fox 47 in Madison, WI. for two seasons from 1990-1992.

In 2000, Mike transitioned into the corporate market where he still performs stand-up comedy and emcees awards banquets.

Mike also founded an entertainment booking agency called Starlight Entertainment, which eventually became known as Pro Comedians. Pro Comedians books stand-up comedians for theaters, clubs and corporate events all over the US.

Mike resides in Madison, WI with his wife, Barbara, and their son, Gunnar.
