The Comicfestival Hamburg is Hamburg's leading comics and illustration festival; it provides as its main sponsors and supporters the municipality of Hamburg, as well as many official and independent associations. It is held annually since 2006, usually between the last week of September and the first of October, with the participation of several national and international artists.

Festival themes

Comicfestival Hamburg deals the field of comics and publishing; it focuses on independent artistic productions, fanzines and graphic novels through a wide range of exhibitions, workshops and readings. There is also a public market in which authors, student collectives and professional publishers sell their works directly to the readers.

The festival was created in 2006 by Sascha Hommer, a famous German cartoonist, and Heiner Fischer; the team then extended to a circle of authors and people related to the German comics world and often linked to the University of Hamburg.

For the past 12 years, Comicfestival Hamburg has been creating a real network between artists, publishers, creatives, art venues, small shops and neighborhood cafes, and it has been extending the fruition of comics and graphic novels to unusual audiences like whole families, children, and different niches of artists.

Some recurrent names of the festival are publishers such as Reprodukt, Avant verlag, Rotopolpress, Drawn & Quarterly; it's also important to mention the collaboration between the festival and the University of Applied Sciences (HAW): every year several exhibitions are dedicated to projects that students created ad hoc or that they build during the school semester. In this way, much attention is paid to the Hamburg emerging authors; to them is left the opportunity to set up exhibitions and readings in a more professional way.

As emphasized in the official program of the different editions, and as often reiterated by Hommer, "For us, publishers are not the center of attention, as in the case of major events in Erlangen or Munich," he says, "but our taste, our passion, and of course our readers. "[1]

Organisation

The festival takes place physically throughout the central area of Hamburg, with exhibitions and events located in the city; venues are not just galleries or institutional locations but - especially for Off events - they are also bars, pubs and cafes. The key districts of the festival are Karoviertel, Neustadt, St. Pauli, Schanzenviertel, Reeperbahn.

Logistically, the festival exists because of the physical help of many volunteers, often HAW students, but not necessarily. The volunteer is fundamental in this type of festival: it covers tasks as setting up exhibitions, coordinating readings and events, taking care of guest artists, managing the public image of the festival and so on. Thanks to this self-organized system, almost all artistic events are free and in this way they are accessible to as many people as possible.

Festival Library

During the Comicfestival Hamburg, a self-managed library called "[https://www.the-gutter.de/ The Gutter]" is open at special times, and here are available thousands of titles including comics, fanzines and graphic-novels, all for free. The library is located in the Gangeviertel complex, a self-managed building that offers several activities, from theater shows to concerts, lectures and exhibitions.[2] The Festival uses this place almost every year during the Festival as a venue for readings, exhibitions and for the official presentation with readings of institutional speeches.

In 2018 the official opening saw __, ___, and Sascha Hommer presenting the festival with a series of official speeches at the attention of the press.
