}}CASC (short for Computer Algebra in Scientific Computing) is an annual conference on computer algebra with an emphasis on scientific computing and its applications.[2]

The conference is mostly attended by academic experts in mathematics coming from Europe, North America, and Asia.

History

The CASC conference was stimulated in 1997 by the idea of bridging the gap between the researchers working in the field of computer algebra systems themselves, the computer algebra algorithms, and the researchers who are using the systems and methods

of computer algebra in various areas of scientific computing.

The first conference was hosted in 1998 by the Saint Petersburg Department of the V.A. Steklov Institute of Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The founding general chairs are Ernst W. Mayr and Vladimir P. Gerdt. While Gerdt is still serving as a general chair, Mayr retired in 2013 from his position and is succeeded by Werner M. Seiler; in 2018 Francois Boulier joined as general chair.[3][4]

Focus

The topics address different areas from scientific computing.[5] In particular,

  • exact and approximate computation,
  • numerical simulation using computer algebra systems,
  • parallel symbolic-numeric computation,
  • symbolic-numeric methods for polynomial equations and inequalities,
  • symbolic-numeric methods for differential, differential-algebraic and difference equations,
  • (computer) algebraic aspects of differential and integral operators,
  • algorithms and complexity in computer algebra,
  • automated reasoning in algebra and geometry,
  • algebraic methods in geometric modeling,
  • application of computer algebra to natural sciences and engineering,
  • problem solving environments,
  • internet accessible symbolic and numeric computation.

Proceedings

Potential publications submitted by the authors have to pass a single blind peer review process in order to be considered for presentation at CASC and publication in the conference proceedings. The proceedings have been published by Springer Science+Business Media.[6]

Conferences

The host institution alternates yearly between German and Eastern European/Asian research institutes or universities. Past CASC conferences have been held in Aachen,

Beijing,[7]

Berlin,

Bonn,

Chisinau, Kalamata, Kassel, Kobe, Konstanz, Lille, Maribor, Munich, Passau, Saint-Petersburg, Samarkand, Tsakhkadzor, Warsaw, and Yalta.[8]
