Conduit Magazine is an independent international journal of poetry, art, non-fiction, and interviews.

Conduit was founded in Western Massachusetts in 1993 by current executive editor William Waltz, with the first two issues being assembled by hand in a Kinkos.[1][2] Since that time, Conduit has developed a cult-following, partially due to its pioneering presence as an alternative literary outlet for creative work reputed to be eccentric and irreverent.[3] Its reputation is preceded in part by the "mouthy" and slapstick temperament of its editorship.[4][5] The journal has been the subject of commentary for publishing contemporary work from emerging and established American and international writers that is formally uncommon and characteristically humorous. Conduit incorporates design elements, "gags", and vernacular that are considered atypical of traditional literary journals, and has been described as "quirky”, "elegant”,[6] "off-the-wall",[7] "unique", "informative", "rowdy",[8] and "electric". The journal's pathos is influenced by surrealism. Oddities of the publication include unusually narrow pages that measure 10.5 inches tall and 5 inches wide, and pagination marked by words instead of numbers.

In its 13th issue, Conduit published a poem in an extinct Zapotec language.

As of 2019, the production of Conduit continues without the financial support of grant money or university affiliation. In the Spring of 2019, Conduit released its twenty-ninth issue.

Conduit has published the poetry of Rae Armantrout, John Ashbery, Mary Jo Bang, David Berman, Terrance Hayes, Brenda Hillman, Eileen Myles, Alice Notley, Ron Padgett, Mary Ruefle, Tomaž Šalamun, Charles Simic, Cole Swensen, James Tate (writer), Dara Wier, Matthew Zapruder, Wendy Xu, Dean Young (poet), and many others. Regularly contributing poets include, among others, Bob Hicok and Noelle Kocot. Poems from Conduit have been anthologized in The Best American Poetry[9] and The Pushcart Prize.[10]

Translation

Conduit frequently publishes translated work, and has published translations of the work of Dante Alighieri, Guillaume Apollinaire, Charles Baudelaire, Roberto Bolaño, Josefine Klougart, Henri Michaux, and others.

Interviews

Conduit publishes interviews with public figures and thinkers from various disciplines, ranging from astronomers and ethno-botonists to historians and oceanic researchers. Past interview subjects have been Terence McKenna,[3] Matt Taibbi, Krista Tippett, and many others. In August of 2012, a portion of Conduit’s interview with Buzz Aldrin was reprinted in Harper’s Magazine.[11]

Artwork

Conduit has presented the visual artwork of many emerging and established artists, including Louise Bourgeois, Leonora Carrington, Marcel Duchamp, Barbara Kruger, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, and Ai Weiwei.

Conduit features artist Scott Dolan's long-running illustrated work The Adventures of Kutch & Mancuso in nearly every issue.

Conduit Books & Ephemera

In 2018, Conduit announced a book-publishing extension, named Conduit Books & Ephemera. Two book prizes were introduced: the Marystina Santiestevan First Book Prize and the Minds on Fire Open Book Prize. The first two books from Conduit Books & Ephemera were published in March of 2019.

Marystina Santiestevan First Book Prize Winners: Animul/Flame by Michelle Lewis (2019)

Minds on Fire Open Book Prize Winners: The Last Note Becomes Its Listener by Jeffrey Morgan (2019)
