Congregation Beit Simcha Tucson ("House of Joy") is a Progressive Jewish Congregation that serves Jewish population of Tucson, Arizona, Oro Valley, Marana, Arizona and Catalina Foothills, Arizona. Established in October of 2018[1], by a group of dedicated and passionate congregants with Senior Rabbi Samuel M. Cohon [2] it lives up to its name and offers joyous worship and festival services with music, songs and Oneg receptions, youth education and Adult Education Academy classes, social justice work and cultural programming. Senior Rabbi Samuel M. Cohon is a third generation Rabbi, whose Grandfather Samuel Solomon Cohon (22 March 1888 – 22 August 1959) was a rabbi and Chair of Theology at Hebrew Union College, a prominent leader of American Reform Judaism in the mid-20th Century. HistoryCongregation Beit Simcha Tucson held its Inaugural Shabbat services on Friday, October 19th, 2018 at the Harvey and Deana Evenchik Center for Jewish Philanthropy at the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona (JFSA). This newest Tucson Jewish Congregation was created to serve the needs of Jews residing in the Northwest Tucson, Oro Valley and Catalina Foothills areas. After a few months of searching for the best location and rotating Shabbat Services between JFSA and Oro Valley Community Center, the Congregation has settled in its current location in the heart of Catalina Foothills. Thanks to the congregants' dedication, commitment and generosity, Congregation Beit Simcha was fully equipped with many necessary ritual and practical items within weeks and holds weekly Friday night and Saturday morning Shabbat services and Torah Study, youth and adult education classes, cultural and outreach Jewish programming and more. Senior RabbiRabbi Samuel M. Cohon is a charismatic and intelligent rabbi, talented cantor, spiritual leader and teacher of dedication, knowledge, energy and enthusiasm [3]. From 1999 to 2017, he served as a Senior Rabbi of Temple Emanu-El in Tucson, AZ bringing excellence, depth and joy to Arizona’s first historic congregation, doubling its membership and reviving many of the programs with passion and determination. He is also the host of The Too Jewish Radio Show with Rabbi Sam Cohon and Friends [4], aired weekly throughout Arizona from 2002 to the present, a top ten Jewish podcasts in N. America. Many Beit Simcha Tucson congregants have been inspired by Rabbi Cohon's innovative and joyous services, captivating discussions and interactive educational classes, filled with humor and depth.
