词条 | Draft:Controversies surrounding Xi Jinping |
释义 |
This article is focused on the controversies of Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, President of the People's Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission. Controversies related to personality cultFollowing the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, Xi Jinping assumed the position of General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and became the fifth-generation paramount leader of the People's Republic of China. As a result, the CPC propaganda department began to overwhelmingly promote the personal image of Xi, characterizing him as Xí Dàdà (习大大), or "Uncle Xi", and published such propaganda materials as the General Secretary Xi Jinping important speech series. The 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2017 witnessed the culmination of personality cult since the Cultural Revolution, with the state media calling Xi "Supreme Commander" and "Chief Designer", a status almost equivalent to that of Mao Zedong. In August 2017, a documentary specifically tailored for Xi, China's Major-Country Diplomacy, premiered on China Central Television (CCTV). It was heavily re-aired in prime time on other major television stations in China. Foreign Minister Wang Yi later published an article in Study Times, in which he praised Xi's diplomatic views as "innovative" and "surpassing all traditional international relations theories over the past 300 years". In February 2019, a mobile app, "Xue Xi Strong Nation", launched by the CPC propaganda department, became the No. 1 downloaded free app on China's App Store, surpassing such big hitters as WeChat and TikTok. The app name is a word play on Xué Xí (学习), which means simultaneously "study and review" and "study Xi (Jinping)". Users get points for scrolling through state-media articles about Xi and answering quizzes. CPC officials required many of its 80 million members to score points on the Xue Xi app. Many users called the app the digital Little Red Book. Some researchers have pointed out that there exist striking similarities between the personality cult of Xi and that of Mao. Both painted the leader in question as an anti-Western rebel who looked down upon the so-called universal values in Europe and America with disdain.
