A Cryptoasset (or crypto asset), is a kind of digital asset which exists only in virtual form within a system powered by a decentralized ledger technology such as Blockchain. The most common and likely the original form of cryptoassets are cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, but not all cryptocurrencies can be classified as cryptoassets.

In traditional markets, assets are broadly described as resource with economic value[1]. Fiat currencies, but also real estate, artwork, Internet domain names, contracts and other financial instruments can be classified as assets. Monetary transactions between parties are primarily performed by the use of currencies [2], though any asset, while holding economic value, can be used as a medium of exchange. However, unlike currencies, other assets may have non-monetary functions: real estate offer a living space, artwork can be contemplated and Internet domain names host websites.

Similarly, cryptoassets may represent rights and obligations, contractual arrangements, shares of an organization, derivatives, deeds and titles of ownership, corporate bonds, wills, etc. - all of which possessing economic value derived from its underlying (non-monetary) utility. Typically, cryptoassets (other than cryptocurrencies) are issued by third parties on appropriate platforms, such as Ethereum [3], in the form of special utility tokens, whose behavior is specified by the issuer by means of a smart contract.
