}}Crystal Lagoons was founded in 2007[1] when the scientist and entrepreneur Fernando Fischmann, patented a technology[2] that allows for transparent bodies of water of unlimited size, suitable for both bathing and water sports, to be economically viable.[3] The company headquarters are based in Dallas, Texas[4], and Miami, Florida.[5] In 2009, Crystal Lagoons was valued by the Boston Consulting Group at US$ 1,800 million.[6]

The company has over 600 projects signed, built or under construction in 60 countries.[7] Although its focus is on real estate,[8] it is also expanding its business model with lagoons that can be accessed by the public via an entrance ticket. The company plans to develop them in public and amusement parks, golf courses, stadiums, etc.[9]

History

The company was founded by Fernando Fischmann, a biochemist by profession. After years of investigation, he established a way of creating large bodies of water that ensure efficient energy use and low maintenance costs.[10]

In 1986, Fernando Fischmann bought a 150-acre plot of land in the town of Algarrobo on the Chilean coast with plans of building a holiday home complex. The waters in Algarrobo are notoriously unsafe and the Peru Current, also called Humboldt Current, stops the temperature from rising above 17 degrees Celsius (62° F), even at the height of summer.[11]

Fernando Fischmann, who had a vision of building a resort reminiscent of the Caribbean[12], began researching ways of creating a large lagoon with temperate waters, similar to those found in tropical countries. One of the challenges was to recreate these environments in other climates while still being energy efficient. In 1997, following years of research, with varying results; he finally hit on a technology that insures that the lagoons stay in crystalline condition.[13]

The company’s first project, San Alfonso del Mar, was awarded the Guinness World Record for the largest swimming pool in the world in 2007. It covers an area of 19-acres[14] and prompted interest from property developers across the globe. In 2015, the multinational was awarded its second world record when it opened a 30-acre lagoon in the Citystars Sharm El Sheik development in Egypt.[15]

Technology

Crystal Lagoons has a portfolio of over 2.000 patents in 190 countries[16], which allows the firm to develop technology that makes it economically feasible to upkeep large bodies of water. It is these that make the firm the only company with the know-how to maintain such large bodies of water in crystalline condition while using a minimum of additives and energy.[17] The firm utilizes several proprietary technologies to reduce the cost and maintenance of its large-scale lagoon developments.[18] The system implemented by Crystal Lagoons applies natural compounds and different ultrasonic waves in the water, causing contaminating particles to agglomerate into larger particles, which can then be easily removed without the need of filtrating the entire volume of water.

The system also applies controlled pulses in the water that are determined by their own algorithms, making it unnecessary to maintain a high and permanent level of disinfection in the water. Due to the characteristics of this technology, it requires less energy and water than traditional filtration systems.
