Dai Wei (Chinese :戴威; born in 1991^[1]), one of the most famous Chinese grassroot entrepreneur who born in 1990s, is the founder and CEO of Ofo (bike sharing).While a student at Peking University, he co-founded ofo, the world’s first dockless bike-sharing platform with a pioneering system that focuses on connecting bicycles, not manufacturing them. ofo under Dai’s leadership is committed to providing the best short-distance transportation experience for urban residents around the globe, while harnessing the benefits of a shared economy to promote green, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly economic development.Dai is a passionate supporter of education as a catalyst for eliminating poverty—his experience teaching in rural Qinghai, China for a year as a graduate student inspired him to found “Western China Athletic Development” and “Chinese Engine of Dreams”, initiatives that support education and development programs with the goal of alleviating the impact of poverty in Western China.^[2] He has been recognized by Fortune China as a member of their “40 Under 40 Business Elite”and “30 Under 30 Asia”^[2].

On July 6, 2017,the Ofo shared bike completed a new round of financing of more than $700 million.Dai Wei said,"I think cycling is the best way to know the world."And he believes:One day, Ofo will have a strong influence on the would, like Google.^[3]

Personal life

Childhood

In 1991, Dai Wei was born in Xuancheng, Anhui, China. When he was 7 years old, he was waked up by his father who watched World Cup in France at midnight and from then on, he became a big fan of Ronaldo (Brazilian footballer).After he entered primary school, he started to set up a soccer team with his schoolmates, which has lasted for 9 years. In 2006, Dai Wei succeeded in entering the best High School in his hometown: NO.1 High School in Xuancheng^[4]. When he was in the first grade in high school, he promised to his father that he would enter Peking University after graduating from high school. From then on, he concentrated himself in studying and didn't waste time. Because of that, he put on his 500 degrees glasses after 3 years.

Loving cycling

In 2009, Dai Wei was admitted into Guanghua School of Management in Peking University, where he served as the Chairman of the Guanghua School Student Association and was President of the Peking University Student Union^[5].The first club he joined was the Peking University Cycling Association, which carried out the exercise of cycling and went to Phoenix Ridge. The longest journey has been 2,000 kilometers.

In 2010, Dai Wei did a part-time job in a restaurant near his school. By suggesting his boss provide free Wifi for customers, he succeeded in increasing the number of customers and got a 1000 yuan bonus from his boss.

Be a volunteer teacher in Qinghai

In 2012, Dai Wei was admitted to the graduate school of Pecking University. He happen to know the difficulty of the people who live in the west part of China though the activity "Donation of recycled military training clothes to Tibet and Qinghai" held in the campus. Dai was touched and decided to be a volunteer teacher for one year in the west part of China.

In 2013, Dai Wei came to Dongxia, a small town in Qinghai province where a math teache's board wages for one day is only 3 yuan and what made Dai sad is the people there have little chance to take a shower. So he had to take 4 hours and exchange 4 bus to the county to have a bath. To solve the problem, he bought a bike and decided to ride back to school, which only cost 3 hour but made the journey more interesting. From then on, he fell in love with cycling and traveled around Qinghai in a year. He said, "I think cycling is the best way to know the world." At the end of the teaching, he returned to Pecking University for a master's degree in economics. He and his friends began to develop a bicycle career. Soon the ofo was born, and a deeply customized cycling tourism project was created.^[4]

Founding Ofo

In 2014, Dai Wei 's riding tourism organization was supported by Paking University senior and got the first angel investment. Dai 's dream, combining hobby into career, finally came true in one year.Dai Wei established cycling team, founded nearly 10 cycling tour line, developed cycling fans nearly 2,000 and organized several big cycling tour in some famous palces of interest, including TaiWan Island, Mount Fuji, Hainan Island and so on.His cycling group became one of the most professional outdoor organization in Pecking.

In 2014, Dai Wei and other 4 partners founded ofo bike and put forward an indea "Economic+intelligence hardware" to solve the problem of last kilometer in a trip.

On January 30, 2016, Dai Wei,the founder and CEO of Ofo and his co-founder Zhang Siding received the GSR venture A round of investment:RMB 10 million. After six months, Ofo and Mobike became the hottest project for investing.

On Narch 1,2017,Dai Wei announced that Ofo had completed D round of $450 million financing.^[6]

Urban sharing scheme

Dai Wei put forward Urban sharing scheme, which will welcome global brand and producer of bicycle to access to ofo providing more survices. The future users will experience on ofo with different types of bicycles demand of diverse. ^[7]

The Urban sharing scheme also encouraged citizen to share their own spare bicycle with more citizen. And the people who shared bike will have the right to use the bikes offerded by Ofo for free. According to the experience of Ofo, this plan can improve the efficiency of using bike and save more space for cities.^[8]

Achievement

In 2011, Dai Wei was named by Pecking University as the the ousting student cadres in 2010-2011 .He has won the "May 4th" of Beijing university scholarship, Guanghua scholarship and the first Beijing university social work prize. He and his team won the the champion in the Pecking University Freshman Cup Competition, the third prize in the HSBC Asia/McKinsey case competition, and the first prize in the Culture Festival Symphony show orchestra in Pecking University.

In April,2017, he has been recognized by Fortune China as a member of their “40 Under 40 Business Elite”and “30 Under 30 Asia”^[2]
