释义

Dancing With The Students (DWTS) is a Philadelphia based nonprofit organization that offers ballroom dancing instruction to students in low socio-economic areas across Philadelphia and parts of Kentucky grades four through high school.

About the Program

A 10-week program in Waltz, Swing, Tango, and Mergengue is taught by qualified ballroom instructors with emphasis placed on “personal flare.” The students compete with students within their class, and not other schools. A disco ball is given to each school, to be used for the “Grand Finale” in week 10. All students receive medals. Trophies are given to the couples for best waltz, tango, merengue, and swing. Trophies are given to the one couple who is the best overall dancer. A small revolving disco ball is given to the one student who shows the best effort and attitude.

Dancing With The Students does not teach a specific grade. The program meets with the principal of each school and the principal tells DWTS which grade(s) would benefit the most from the program. As a result, the program teaches dance to students in grades four through high school. There are two teachers for each class in an effort to better meet the needs of the students and model the dance steps.

Our History

In 2003, Susan Martinelli Shea’s son, Steve, was a sophomore at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut when his college roommate, Mark Fisher, was murdered.[1][2] After much reflection throughout the year, Sue decided to quit her job as a special education teacher, and volunteer in Philadelphia at the Gesu School.

While at the Gesu School in 2005, Sue decided to start a ballroom dancing program in Philadelphia. She went to the Arthur Murray Dance Studio to research children and dancing. It was there she met Samantha Bellomo, a Barrymore Award winning and Arthur Murray dance teacher, manager, and choreographer. A friendship and partnership blossomed.

With the artistic direction of Samantha Bellomo, Dancing With The Students developed into a non-profit organization that offers ballroom dance instruction to students in grades four through high school in various schools located in and around the Philadelphia area.

Dancing With The Students has grown each year since 2005 with more and more schools participating in the program. DWTS first started teaching ballroom dance at the Gesu School in 2005. In 2006, the non-profit expanded to teach at the St. Martin de Porres Elementary School. In 2007, DWTS started teaching at both La Salle Academy and St. Malachy’s Elementary School. In 2008, the non-profit started teaching at Drexel Neumann Academy. In 2009, the Dancing with the Students Troupe was created. In 2010, DWTS started teaching at St. Peter the Apostle, Smedley Mastery Charter School, Mercy Career Technical High School, and St. Rose of Lima Elementary School. In 2011, the non-profit organization started teaching at St. James Episcopal School. In 2015, Dancing with the Students started teaching at Luis Muñez Marin Elementary School, KIPP Elementary School, and Cristo Rey High School. In 2016, DWTS expanded to teach at KIPP Middle School, Austin Meehan Middle School, West Catholic High School, and C.B. Community School. In 2017, DWTS started teaching at the Academy Park High School, Webster Elementary School, Furness High School, Crawford Middle School in Lexington, KY, and Russell Cave Elementary School in Lexington, KY. In 2018, DWTS expanded to the Philadelphia Military Academy and Samuel Fels High School. Today, Dancing With The Students teaches at 24 schools across Philadelphia and Kentucky.
