}}Danger Close is a 2019 Australian war film directed by Kriv Stenders, written by Stuart Beattie and starring Travis Fimmel, Luke Bracey and Richard Roxburgh. It is based on the true story of the Battle of Long Tan, a notable battle in the Vietnam War in which Major Harry Smith and his 108-strong company held off 2500 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers for three and a half hours on August 18, 1966.[1]

Synopsis

Late afternoon August 18, 1966 South Vietnam – for three and a half hours, in the pouring rain, amid the mud and shattered trees of a rubber plantation called Long Tan, Major Harry Smith and his dispersed company of 108 young and mostly inexperienced Australian and New Zealand soldiers are fighting for their lives, holding off an overwhelming enemy force of 2,500 battle hardened Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers. With their ammunition running out, their casualties mounting and the enemy massing for a final assault, each man begins to search for the strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honour, decency and courage.

The Battle of Long Tan is one of the most savage and decisive engagements in Australian military history, earning both the United States and South Vietnamese Presidential Unit Citations for gallantry along with many individual awards. 18 Australians and more than 500 enemy were killed.

DANGER CLOSE is a nail biting and dramatic exploration of war illustrating heroism, tragedy and the sacrifice of battle.[2]

Production

Red Dune Films, an independent film company, was established by Martin Walsh, a former Australian Special Forces commando, in 2005 to develop and produce the feature film Danger Close and the award winning documentary The Battle Of Long Tan (2006). The Danger Close script was completed in June 2014.[3] [4]

The 40 day shoot began in May 2018 in the South Burnett Region of Queensland, Australia and wrapped on the Gold Coast on July 6 2018. The primary filming location was a paulownia plantation at Wooroolin, near Kingaroy. Further filming was then conducted on a Gold Coast sound stage. For authenticity the film used one of the actual Huey helicopters that participated in the 1966 battle and young Australian Army Afghanistan veterans as extras. The helicopter was refurbished for filming before being returned to the Caloundra RSL where it has been on display since 2012.
