Dang Foods is a Berkeley, California-based food brand that makes “natural” Asian-inspired snacks. The company is probably best known for it’s coconut chips and sticky rice snacks.

History

The company was founded in 2011 by Vincent Kitirattragarn and his brother Andrew Kitirattragarn.[1] Vincent was originally thinking about starting a Thai food truck, and found that his mom's recipe for Thai lettuce wraps required toasted coconut, which he could not find in grocery stores. He toasted shredded coconut at home and thought that the treat could be sellable in the US. He named his brand after his mother's first name, Dang.[2]

The company launched its coconut chips in Whole Foods Market in July 2012. The company later launched an onion chip product but discontinued the line because some consumers did not like the taste.[3] In 2016, Sonoma Brands started by Jon Sebastiani of Krave Jerky (sold to The Hershey Company) provided Dang with a minority investment.[4]

In 2017, Dang Foods won a Sofi Award from the Specialty Food Association for its sticky rice chips.[5]

As of March 2018, its products are sold in 11,000 retail locations including Walmart, Kroger, Target, Costco, and Amazon.[6]

In September 2018, CNN reported on the Ketogenic diet trend and featured an energy bar made by Dang Foods which is Ketogenic diet certified.[7]
