Daniel Kurganov is a Boston-based Russian-American violinist born in Minsk in 1986.

Biography

Kurganov grew up near Chicago and began his musical studies on the piano. At age 16, he began to play violin, making him one of the latest-starting concert violinists.^[1] He completed his studies at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) under Rudolf Koelman, protégé of Jascha Heifetz, and additionally received private instruction from Ilya Kaler and Desiree Ruhstrat. Kurganov is an alumnus of the Keshet Eilon International Mastercourse.

Instruments

Kurganov plays a violin made by Andrew Ryan in 2013 and has also used a violin made by Carlo Tononi.

Teacher

Since 2013, Kurganov has taught violin privately in Boston, Massachusetts, and has been coaching professional violinists worldwide via video lessons. Kurganov is also the founder of ARCO, a platform for violinists and violin teachers to access and arrange study materials.

Performer

Recent concerts include solo appearances with the New Hampshire Philharmonic and Canterbury Strings, performances at the Museum of Fine Arts^[2], Boston, recital tours throughout Boston and Chicago^[3]^[4]^[5]^[6], and multiple concert tours of Japan with his chamber group Kurofune Ensemble and with the Boston Chamber Orchestra. In Sion, Switzerland, Kurganov took part in “The Violins of Hope” project, where he performed on a violin rescued from Auschwitz. In Boston, Kurganov performs as a member of the Essex Chamber Players. Kurganov is active on YouTube, sharing his performances as well as curating rare recordings of famous historical artists. Discography

2018: "Between the Notes: Music for Violin & Piano" with pianist Constantine Finehouse for the Spice Classics label. The disc features the music of Brahms, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Schemmer and Gershwin.^[8] It has garnered positive reviews from Fanfare Magazine and ArtsFuse. ^[9]

Kurganov has written essays of musical criticism for the Boston Musical Intelligencer^[10] as well as a manual on left-hand violin technique. In 2016, Daniel arranged a new cadenza for the Violin Concerto in d minor Op.77 of Johannes Brahms.^[11]
