Daniel Morgan Taylor (31 August 1847-26 August 1907) was a colonel in the United States Army who served in the Spanish-American War. He also served as a colonel in the Ordnance Department of the United States Army. Early Life and FamilyTaylor was born in Washington, D.C. to Franck Taylor (1811-1873), who was born in England but had lived in Washington, D.C. for 40 years at the time of his death in 1873, and Virginia Neville Simms (1812-1892), a granddaughter of Presley Neville, who was a colonel in the American Revolutionary War, and a great-granddaughter of Daniel Morgan, a brigadier general in the Revolution and a United States Representative from Virginia. Two of Morgan's first cousins were Squire Boone and Daniel Boone.[1] Taylor was the younger brother of Henry Clay Taylor, a rear admiral in the United States Navy. His older sister, Charlotte Taylor, married Robley D. Evans, also a rear admiral in the United States Navy. His nephew, Franck Taylor Evans, was a captain who served in the Spanish-American War and World War I. Another brother, Franck Eveleigh Taylor, was a major in the Army. His niece, Neville Simms Taylor, married Walter Rockwell Gherardi, a rear admiral in the Navy who served in the Spanish-American War, Philippine-American War, and World War I. Gherardi was the son of Bancroft Gherardi, a rear admiral, and younger brother of Bancroft Gherardi, Jr., an electrical engineer. Another niece, Emily Wendell Taylor, married Edward Stanley Kellogg, a captain in the United States Navy during World War I and a governor of American Samoa. His great-niece, Frances Eddy Taylor, married John Martin Kennaday, a captain during World War II, while her sister, Mary Darrow Taylor, married Jesse Wallace, a captain in World War II and governor of American Samoa. His niece Mary Virginia Taylor married Jehu V. Chase, a rear admiral in the United States Navy. Mary and Jehu had two sons, Harry Taylor Chase, a captain in World War II, and Jay Valentine Chase, also a captain in World War II, and two daughters: Mary Taylor Chase, who married James Auburn Roberts, a captain in World War II, and Elizabeth Sanders Chase, who married Rex Smith Caldwell, who served in World War I (in the Marines), World War II (as a captain in the Navy) and the Korean War (again as a captain in the Navy). Chase and Caldwell had two sons, Lieutenant Junior Grade Rex Smith Caldwell Jr. and Captain James Franklin Caldwell. His aunt, Emily Douglas Simms, married French Forrest, a United States Navy captain who later joined the Confederate States in the Civil War.[2] Taylor graduated from the United States Military Academy on July 1, 1865. He was commissioned a cadet post-graduation. He was promoted to second lieutenant on June 15, 1869.[3] Military CareerSecond lieutenant Taylor was promoted to first lieutenant on November 1, 1874, and to major on July 7, 1898. He served as a major during the Spanish-American War. He again was promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 19, 1904, and received his final promotion on November 12, 1906, to colonel, which he held until his death. He was the Chief Ordnance Officer of the Department of the Lakes, a now-defunct military department of the United States Army, from 1905-1907.[4] Death and BurialColonel Taylor passed away on August 26, 1907, in Augusta County, Virginia, at age 60. His wife, Annie Landon Gardner, survived him by 30 years, passing away on December 15, 1938. She was born February 17, 1850 in Sharon, New York. She was buried alongside her husband. Both were buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. His headstone reads: "Daniel Morgan Taylor, Colonel Ordnance Dept. U.S. Army; with the quote 'I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.'"[5] External Links
