Daniel Wurtzel (born 1 November 1962) is a contemporary American kinetic artist. He is known for his kinetic sculptures and installations using air and lightweight materials.  Wurtzel’s work has been featured in the theater, museums and large-scale events.

Early life and education

Wurtzel was born on 1 November 1962 and grew up in Richmond, VA, the middle of three children. He went to Wesleyan University from 1981 – 1985, where he was awarded a Bachelors of Fine Arts, with a major in Arts and Architecture.[1]

Career

After Wurtzel's graduation from Wesleyan University, he moved to Brooklyn, NY. In his early career, Wurtzel approached sculpture making by exploring the intrinsic nature various materials including wood, stone and steel,[2] inspired by the artwork of Isamu Noguchi and Richard Serra.

Air Sculptures

Wurtzel's work changed when he turned from bronze, wood, stone steel sculptures to kinetic sculpture[3] using airflow and lightweight materials. Wurtzel was inspired to work with air after watching a maple leaf suspended above a sidewalk grate.[4] This led to experimentation with airflow and other materials that could fly, including: fabrics, mylar and paper confetti, plastic, feathers, fog and other lightweight materials. 

Museums

Since working with air, Wurtzel has shown his artwork at the Musée Rodin, the Grand Palais in Paris, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, the Phillips Collection, Phaeno Science Center and the Paralympic Games in Doha.  and has artworks on permanent display at the Museu do Amanha in Rio de Janeiro, Swiss Science Center Technorama, The Tate Modern Turbin Hall, the World Expo, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw, Kunsthall 3.14.

Theater

Theatrically, Wurtzel's work has been featured in Cirque du Soliel's show Amaluna, directed by Diane Paulus, which has been touring since 2012. Wurtzel's Paper Tornado was center stage at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony in front of a worldwide audience.[5][6] Wurtzel's Glitter Vortex was the signature special effect in the Broadway musical Finding Neverland,[7] now on national tour and was named one of the Stage's Best Moments of 2015 by the New York Times Theater Section.[8] He has worked with Julie Taymor in A Midsummer's Night Dream[9] and Robert Lapage in Cartes, Zhang Yimou, Daniel Ezralow and Michel Laprise, Shakespeare's The Tempest.[10][11]
