Darnell Leatherwood (born January 18, 1989) is an American educator, mentor, researcher, social entrepreneur, and businessman.

Early Life and Education

Leatherwood was born on January 18, 1989 at Touchette Regional Hospital.[1] in Centreville, Illinois to Patricia Ann Leatherwood and Darnell Leatherwood, Sr. He is one of two children. He grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois[2] and attended Hawthorne Elementary School, Lansdowne Middle School, and East Saint Louis Senior High School[3]. Leatherwood was valedictorian of his graduating class in middle school, president of his freshman and senior classes in high school, and graduated top 5 in his high school class. He also held multiple leadership positions at his childhood church Ira Grove Freewill Baptist Church. He served as a youth Sunday school teacher, president of the junior usher board, president of the junior choir, and a junior deacon. After graduating high school, Leatherwood attended the College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign[4] where he double majored in Management with a focus in Entrepreneurship and Business Process Management. During his time at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign he served as advisor to the Florida Avenue Residence Hall's[5] Black Student Union EWEZO[6], founder of Man2Man (a community service and mentoring organization), founding advisor for Praise and Anointed Worship in the Word (PAWW; campus christian ministry), vice president of the University Black Chorus[7], and a resident advisor in both the Florida Avenue Residence Hall and Sherman Upper-Division Graduate Hall[8].

After completing his undergraduate program in business, Leatherwood attended the University of Chicago[9] and completed a Master of Arts degree in the Social Sciences[10]. He is currently pursuing a doctorate at the University of Chicago in the School of Social Service Administration[11]. Leatherwood or his work has been featured in Rolling Out[12], BlackDoctors.org[13], The News Gazette[14], The Daily Illini[15] (2)[16], West of the Ryan Current Magazine[17], and the podcast Separate and Unequal[18]

Career

Teaching

Leatherwood is an educator in the city of Chicago and has taught at the elementary, secondary, and post-secondary school levels. He served as the Civic Engagement Coordinator and an assistant teacher at the Montessori School of Englewood [19]. He voluntarily left this position after the Montessori School of Englewood Board of Directors failed to resolve a case of racial discrimination. Leatherwood then went on to teach Algebra 1 at the Urban Prep Academies-Englewood Campus[20]. He has also served as a teaching assistant for graduate students at the University of Chicago.

Mentoring

Leatherwood has mentored hundreds of students across multiple communities, organizations, and institutions. He mentored elementary school students at the Montessori School of Englewood and Fiske Elementary School[21], preteens at the Champaign Juvenile Detention Center [22], adolescents at the Champaign Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club[23], high school students at the Urban Prep Academies-Englewood Campus, undergraduate students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign through various organizations (Man2Man, EWEZO, PAWW, see above for reference), and young adults in the Chicago community transitioning to adulthood. His mentees currently range from youth entering 1st grade to young adults pursuing graduate degrees.

Scholarship

Leatherwood's research interests include urban education, adolescent development, and social inequality/policy. He is a quantitatively trained applied interdisciplinary social scientist and is particularly interested in examining factors associated with academic achievement among vulnerable student populations in and/or from underserved communities. Leatherwood is a founding member of the Black Education Research Group (BERG) which is a research initiative dedicated to eliminating the "achievement gap" and exploring/expanding the national discourse concerning advocacy in Black education. BERG's membership is made up of scholars from multiple universities across Illinois.

Leatherwood is a Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences Fellow and Illinois Board of Higher Education Diversifying Faculty in Illinois Fellow. He chaired and coordinated the University of Chicago Committee on Education's Workshop on Education committee and Workshop on Education[24] (respectively) from 2016 to 2018. He has authored or co-authored peer reviewed publications in such academic journals as Social Service Review[25] and the International Journal of Higher Education[26].

Business

Leatherwood has served as a founder, co-founder, and/or founding board member for multiple enterprises. Leatherwood is co-founder of Leatherwood & Lyles, L.L.C. which was founded in 2016 and is a company dedicated to developing undeserved communities through home-ownership and gainful employment. In 2016 he also served as a founding board member of Quest Christian Academy[27], a boarding school that will service and educate students exposed to the juvenile justice system and/or who are growing up in adverse circumstances. In 2017 he served as a founding board member of For Posterity, Inc.[28] which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing youth violence and providing mentoring/community service in the city of Chicago and abroad. And in that same year he started the Black Boys Shine[29] campaign which is purposed to strengthen/control the Black male narrative and image nationally and internationally.
