Darrell Jay Bennett, Jr., is an American public speaker, former attorney and graduate of Harvard Law School, where he was elected class marshal, and Morehouse College, where he was valedictorian.[1][2][3] He was raised in West Baltimore city. His stepfather, a minister, was given the task of starting a church in Virginia; so when Darrell was twelve, the family moved to Newport News, Virginia. Darrell attended Warwick High School, where he was enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program.[4] While there, he was elected class president his freshman, sophomore and junior years and student body president his senior year. He was also the youngest student to represent Newport News abroad in the city's German-American student exchange program.

He graduated from Morehouse College in 2007 as valedictorian. That fall he entered Harvard Law School, where he graduated and was elected class marshal in 2010.[5] Darrell wrote his first book, Daring to be Different, at 18 as a college freshman.[6] The summer after his sophomore year, he interned in Senator Ted Kennedy’s education office on Capitol Hill,

and the summer after his junior year he worked at an education center in Wismar, Germany. During his law school years, he was a summer associate at

White and Case in Washington, D.C. and Weil Gotshal in New York.

In 2014, Darrell pled guilty to one count of possessing images of minors engaged in unlawful sexual activity, pursuant to videos he downloaded from the internet in 2012. The week after the search of his apartment by federal agents in February 2013, he took and passed the bar exam. [7] He was arrested October 22, 2013, three months after he was inducted into the Maryland bar. For the next eleven months, until he was remanded into custody pursuant to his guilty plea, he continued travelling to public speaking engagements and teaching at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. On December 19, 2014, he was sentenced to eighty-four months (seven years) in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons with a release date of 2021. In 2016, the Second Circuit overruled the district court and lowered the sentence.[8] (Only 1% of federal sentences are successfully overturned on appeal).[9][10] He was released January 23, 2018 after 40 months. In his newest book, Come. Back. Swinging., he opens up about his childhood as well

as his plans for the future.

Professional Career

Darrell moved to New York City in 2010, the day after his law school graduation. In 2013, he founded Bennett Books Global, a private publishing house through which he released his publications as well as several other titles. He has taught criminal justice and

history classes at multiple universities, including ASA College, Metropolitan College and the

City University of New York.[11]

In 2018, after his release from federal prison, he became an advocate in the justice reform

movement and began working at Exodus, a prison reentry organization in Harlem,

New York. In March, he started by teaching employment readiness classes for justice-involved citizens. He was promoted in September 2018 to program director of the I.M.P.A.C.T. Leadership Program (Immersing Motivated Participants in Academic and Career Training).[12]

Darrell Bennett's speeches and books has been featured on the National Public Radio[13], the Tavis Smiley Radio Show, the New Yorker Magazine[14] and the Great

Black Speakers Association.[15] After his first public video on YouTube, his 2007 college valedictory, went viral, he began getting invitations to speak at other colleges as well as churches and student conferences.[16] Over the past decade, he has spoken at many different venues, including at the

International Baccalaureate Organization Global Summit and the Gates Millennium Scholars Conference.[17][18][19]
