He began his career with a stint as an intern for the Washington Capitals. Throughout his career as a sports business professional he has worked at the Sports Business Journal/Sports Business Daily, NHL, IMG, and most recently, Bruin SC. During his 15 years at IMG, he landed a side gig as a sports agent for world renowned Russian-born NHL player, Alex Ovechkin. Abrutyn has taken on the role of negotiating all of Ovechkin’s endorsement and sponsorship deals. He was also the recipient of the Sport Business Journal/Daily’s “40 under 40 Award” in 2008. Work life aside, Abrutyn resides in Rye Brook, NY with his wife Robin and two children, Allison and Michael. Early Life: David was born and raised in Potomac, Maryland by his two parents Vickie and Michael. Together they had David, his older sister Stephanie, and younger brother Daniel. Growing up, Abrutyn greatly enjoyed playing tennis in his free time and even went to a tennis summer camp in Maine. He was a member of the varsity team for his high school, Churchill High School. Aside from tennis, Abrutyn also enjoyed playing soccer. He ways always a sports fanatic. Abrutyn graduated from Churchill High School 1988 after being admitted to the University of Hartford in Connecticut. College: Abrutyn attended the University of Hartford from 1988-1992 where he studied Marketing. During his four years at Hartford he joined the fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi and met his now wife, Robin Berkowitz. They began dating during Abrutyn’s sophomore year and Robin’s junior year. Career: David began his career in the sport business world while in college. He was an intern for the Washington Capitals, where he helped sell different ticketing packages. Part of his job consisted of him attending games and trying to sell ticket packages in the concourse. From there, he landed a gig as an editor for the Sports Business Journal/Sports Business Daily, a publication centered on sport business news . He served as a member of the marketing and sales team rather than a content editor. He was a member of the “Original 5”-the founding group for the publication. From there he moved to New York and began his role as a Corporate Marketing Manager for the National Hockey League (NHL). He was only in that role for 2 years before switching over to the agency side of things. He served as a Senior Vice President of the Consulting Group for 15 years. During this time period is when he also began his dual role as Alex Ovechkin’s off-ice agent. He negotiates all of Alex’s off-ice business ventures, sponsorship, and endorsement deals. He helped facilitate the partnership of Ovechkin and Gillette, Verizon, Beats by Dre, amongst many other things. He is still Ovechkin’s agent today. After a successful 15 years at IMG, Abrutyn took on a new business venture with his boss from IMG. His boss, George Pyne, raised $250M in funds, which was matched by investors giving them $500M in buying power. With that, they created Bruin SC, a venture capital firm. They buy and operate smaller businesses within the realm of sport business. Their holdings include Engine Shop (an experiential marketing agency) and NFL On Location (a NFL hospitality business) amongst other things. The company is still continuing to grow and expand. Abrutyn is currently holds the title of “Partner” at Bruin SC.
Family Life: Abrutyn is one of three siblings: an older sister Stephanie and a younger brother Daniel. His parents Vickie and Michael raised them in Potomac, Maryland. His father Michael passed away from Leukemia while Abrutyn was still in college. He met his current wife Robin during their time at Hartford. They were engaged in 1994 and married in 1995. They had their first child together, Allison, in May of 1998, when they were living in Stamford, CT. They had their second and final child together in 2001, Michael, and moved to Rye Brook, NY shortly before he was born. In 2012 Abrutyn got the family a dog, Mason.
