His acoustic and electronic compositions have been described by [1]The New York Times as “eerie” and “superbly wrought”, “exploring polarities of light and dark, the sacred and the profane”. He has been commissioned by Lincoln Center, Central Park’s Naumburg Orchestral Concerts and BAM, and has collaborated with the world’s leading classical musicians as well as popular musicians such as Alex Somers and Jónsi Birgisson of Sigur Rós, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Referred to as “the Ian Schrager of the music scene” by the New Yorker, Handler is the co-founder of (Le) Poisson Rouge and the Founding Executive & Artistic Director of Ensemble LPR. The venue’s mission is to revive the symbiotic relationship between art and revelry, invigorating the musical landscape for artists and audiences alike. In its nearly ten years of operation the venue has created a new paradigm for classical music, receiving numerous awards and accolades from ASCAP, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone and The New Yorker. Amongst other iconic artists and emerging talents the venue has hosted performances by: Thom Yorke, Paul Simon, Yo-Yo Ma and Lady Gaga. Ensemble LPR has recorded on Deutsche Grammophon and collaborates with artists such as Johnny Greenwood, David Longstreth (of Dirty Projectors), Bryce Dessner (of The National), and Oscar-Nominated composer Mica Levi, and performs throughout the city, in addition to at LPR itself. Handler has been invited to speak on the subject of creativity and entrepreneurship at: The North American Critics Alliance at Lincoln Center, University of Missouri - Kansas City, New York University, Syracuse University, Hunter College, The New School, and The Manhattan School of Music. Handler sits on the advisory boards of: CavanKerry Press, The David Lynch Foundation, Hunter College Department of Music, and The Mount Sinai Department of Psychiatry. He is the creator and host of the radio show “Music to Live By”. Handler is a citizen of the United States and Ireland. He lives in New York City with his wife and two children. |
