David John “Dave” Meyer (born November 14, 1977) is a former American football quarterback for the Virginia Tech Hokies, Roanoke Steam, Indianapolis Colts, and Green Bay Packers. He also served as an offensive graduate assistant coach at Louisiana State University under then Head Coach Nick Saban and Offensive Coordinator Jimbo Fisher.

Early years

David John "Dave" Meyer was born on November 14, 1977 in Paterson, New Jersey.

College/Amateur

Meyer lettered in basketball, football and track at Ramsey High School. While there he started three seasons at quarterback, leading Ramsey to the state championship game at Giants Stadium in his junior season.[1] As a senior, lead Ramsey to 5-0 record before breaking his collarbone and missing the rest of the season. He set the Ramsey High School record for the 110 Meter High Hurdles with a time of 14.4 at the Wayne Hills state sectional meet.[2] For his college career, Meyer chose Virginia Tech.[3]

At Virginia Tech, Meyer played under Frank Beamer. During Meyer’s time at Virginia Tech, he backed up two first round draft picks in Jim Druckenmiller (26th overall to the San Francisco 49ers in 1997) and Michael Vick (1st overall to the Atlanta Falcons in 2001). For his college career, Meyer completed 60 of 112 attempts for 890 yards and 3 touchdowns. He is most remembered for being called on in relief of an injured Michael Vick in 2000 as the Hokies came back to beat Pittsburgh 37-34 and remain undefeated.[3][4]

Professional Career

Roanoke Steam

Signed with the NFL's Roanoke Steam (AF2) and started two games before being signed by the Indianapolis Colts in the backup quarterback position.[5]

Indianapolis Colts

Meyer went undrafted in the 2001 NFL Draft, and signed as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts on April 27, 2001. He competed for the backup quarterback position to Peyton Manning.[6][7]

Green Bay Packers

Meyer signed with the Green Bay Packers in the early 2002 offseason as a free agent.ref name="Free Agent" /> He played for the team for the 2002 season.[8]

Later career

He also served as an offensive graduate assistant coach at Louisiana State University under then Head Coach Nick Saban and Offensive Coordinator Jimbo Fisher.

Personal Life

Meyer set up a website with a friend in 2002 as an attempt to draw interest from NFL and Canadian Football League teams.[6]
