David Pickard (born 8 April 1960, London)[1] is an English arts administrator. He is currently Director of the BBC Proms.[2] Pickard studied music at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, graduating in 1982 before working as Company Manager of the Royal Opera House until 1987. He then worked as Administrator of the New Shakespeare Company until 1989, before being appointed as the Managing Director of Kent Opera. He then worked as the Assistant Director of the 1991 Japan Festival, and joined the European Arts Festival in 1991 as its Artistic Administrator.[2] In 1993 Pickard was appointed as Chief Executive of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment[3], where he founded a number of tours and projects with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Mark Elder, Sir Roger Norrington and Ivan Fischer. He also founded the orchestra's education programme.[4] In 2001 he was appointed as General Director of Glyndebourne Opera House. Under his direction, Glyndebourne became the first UK opera house to live stream its performances online free of charge, and to relay them in HD in cinemas.[5] On 26 May 2015 it was announced that Pickard would succeed Roger Wright as Director of the BBC Proms.[6] Pickard programmed roughly half of the concerts in the 2016 season.[7] In the first hour of booking a record-breaking 57,551 tickets were sold - over 25,000 more than in the equivalent period in the previous year.[8] In 2018 the BBC Proms pledged to ensure that women made up half of the composers of all new commissions by 2022.[9][10] References1. ^"birthdays".
