词条 | Draft:Death with Dignity- The Truth Behind Euthanasia |
释义 | According to data from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), 11.2% of American adults, which is around 25.3 million people, have experienced some form of pain every day for the past three months (Bushak, 2015). People who are diagnosed with one or more debilitating illnesses such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy can make them suffer from tremendous physical pain, sleep deprivation, and feelings of depression. As this pain from the illnesses worsens and becomes unbearable to manage physically and emotionally, the will to live is thrown out the window. Euthanasia solves the problem of a person not wanting to live due to the immense amount of pain but it can also come with multiple different consequences. Euthanasia is defined as the act of a physician or other third party ending a patient's life in response to severe, persistent and untreatable pain and suffering (Morrow, 2018). It can also be known as physician-assisted-suicide. Euthanasia involves a physician, knowingly acting to cause the death of a person suffering from severe and incurable pain by law, as long as the patient and their family agree (Legg, 2018). There are different types of euthanasia that include voluntary and involuntary. Voluntary euthanasia is conducted with consent by the patient. Involuntary euthanasia is when a person is incapable or unable to make their own decisions and a third party takes a patient's life without the informed consent of the patient. Voluntary euthanasia is not legal in most parts of the world (Legg, 2018). The Netherlands and Belgium are currently the only countries who allow the practice of voluntary euthanasia along with Oregon and Washington. Involuntary euthanasia is not legal anywhere (Morrow, 2018). Euthanasia or “putting to sleep” is a common practice among people who own animals who are in pain or who are suffering from a illness. This is a common argument for people who support euthanasia (Legg, 2018). Another common pitch that supports euthanasia is the freedom of choice and the quality of life of the patient (Legg, 2018). Most doctors and family members of the patient claim to know the amount of pain the patient is suffering from but if they have not gone through it, they do not understand. That is some people believe that patients should be given the freedom to choose how much pain is too much to bear. With the patient's family, they are constantly in anxiety about how the patient is feeling and how long they are going to live so euthanasia takes the pain of the family’s shoulders. In a 2017 study from Medical News Today, a Gallup poll indicated that 73 percent of respondents were in favor of euthanasia in the U.S. In that same study, 67 percent were in favor of doctor-assisted suicide (Legg, 2018). With these circumstances, this is why euthanasia is supported. The death of a human is extremely difficult for most people to cope with. When a person assists another in their death process, that can be hard on the person assisting with the others death. Whether it is a family member or a medically certified doctor, the person assisting is affected emotionally in most cases (Legg, 2018). The patient’s competence is also debated. Since the patient is dealing with numerous amounts of health conditions and copious amounts of medication, determining whether or not the patient is being truthful and honest about how they feel can be tough (Legg, 2018). The patient can also feel that they are a waste of time, money, and energy from their family and the medical staff taking care of them. In a 2013 study, in the Medical News Today, where 1,712 respondents represented 49 states, 67 percent of U.S citizens voted against the use of euthanasia. These reasons could support why euthanasia would not be a suitable choice for not only the patient, but its family and medical staff taking care of them. In conclusion, euthanasia is an exceptionally difficult topic to speak about and a controversial topic within the U.S and different countries around the world. With many people dealing with debilitating diseases, this can be hard for them to deal with and not have a way out when their conditions become unbearable. Euthanasia solves the problem of a person not wanting to live due to the immense amount of pain they are in from day to day but it can also come with multiple different consequences.
