Deepak Pun Magar (Nepali: {{Lang|nep|दिपक पुन मगर}}; born 28 April 1991) is a Young Nepalese politician who was also a candidate[1] for the House of Representative in the 2018 election on behalf of communist party of CPN(ML). He was born to a middle class agriculture based family in remote area of Sanibarkhu village ward number 12 of Aathbiskot Municipality in Rukum district as the first child to my parents. His was born to Ram Bahadur Pun(father) and Jasmati Pun(mother). He has two siblings - a brother and a sister.

As a child from a middle class farmer’s family, he had to go to rear cattle with his friends as a child. His primary education was from Triveni Primary School. During his primary education there was Maoist conflict in the nation. Along with Pun, many other children joined the Maoist army as the child soldier. Maoists raised the voice against the social evils like untouchability, discrimination, gender biases, halepratha and so on; Pun was influenced with their cause since childhood. He joined Maoist Party when he was in 4th grade.

Education

He completed his primary education in 2001 A.D. from his village from Bal Kalyan High School. The villages and the whole country was in turmoil in this period of time between the Maoist and the government conflict. Since his early years in school, the ideas like war, murder and politics had brought a great impact on his mind like other school children. On one hand the Maoists projected the beautiful dream in his mind and attracted him to the war. On the other hand, the government heightened its cruelties and torturous activities to the Maoist cadres resulting in a horrible situation in the society and his mind. This resulted in him stopping his formal education and he got involved in the movement initiated by Maoist Party as a whole time Maoist cadre bearing different responsibilities like member, Secretary and President of Maoist Student Union of Bal Kalyan High School. Later on he became Area Member, Secretary and Vice President of the Student Union as the whole time member of the party. This made him leave home with the mission of establishing people’s education in the nation. His duty included collection of tax for seasonal crops, monitor the people’s militia, communicate the geographical security, collect fund and so on. This resulted in him leaving his school education.

In 2001 A.D. while the Maoist war was at its climax, King Birendra with his family were assassinated. After that the Nepalese politics took a different mode. Gyanendra Shah became the new king of Nepal. At that time, there was conflict between pro-Indians and pro-palace Maoist. He was peeping into the politics and the attitudes of the leaders at that time. This was also the education that he was gaining. In Nepali politics one of the political turmoil was when King Gyanendra abducted the elected parliament on the 4th of Oct., 2001 and took all the power under his control. He also banded all the political parties. As a result the seven parties carried out the demonstration programs on the street against the king’s tyranny. On the other hand the underground party of that time was going through the ideological conflict in itself, especially in its policies and visions regarding India, Royal Palace and the then alliance with the democracy front. Also there was conflict regarding alliance with the revolutionary seven party alliance. Finally Maoist party came to the decision to support the people’s revolution brought by the seven parties in the street. Thus according to the party policy he took part in the revolution and came to Kathmandu in the mid 2006 A.D.

As time progressed, he met one of his friend who was studying in Kathmandu. He encouraged and supported him to complete his education; he completed his SLC in 2007. Then he completed my IA and BA from Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus majoring in Journalism and Political Science. He realize that hadn't he continued his education after the peace process in the nation, he wouldn’t have completed his graduate degree. He closely watched the negative and positive aspects of Maoist war and found the war to be more severe and criminal in nature. This guided his future political journey. Along with this he brought his formal and informal education hand in hand. Now he wanted to continue his life as a political activist and a scholar.

Politician Background

Early Career

Since an early age, the idea of slavery, gender biases, untouchablility, racial/class discrimination and others brought by the Maoist party made him a firm believer against these ideas. These ideas were the foundation weapon for the Maoist party and the political turmoil between the state and revolutionary army shaped his mind to fight for the rights of the people. He joined the Maoist war in 2001 A.D. at a tender age of 12 and later got involved as a full time member in the political activities since 2003 A.D. ignoring his childhood happiness and enjoyments for the sake of his nation, people and the revolution. He became the President of Children’s All Students Union while he was in primary school. After that he became member, secretary, Vice President and President of All Nepal Student Union (Revolutionary) of Bal Kalyan Secondary School respectively. The then responsibilities widened his experience and he was given the responsibility of area committee member, secretary and vice President respectively. He was only 15 and continued his political career.

Political journey with the Maoist Party

After the royal massacre in 2052 B.S., the Nepalese politics took a different mode. The seven party alliance started the movement against the monarchy in Nepal, the revolutionary Maoist party then was an underground party, which also adopted the policy to support the movement which was later on known as the 2nd people’s movement in Nepal’s political history. This occurred in 2006/2007 A.D. At that time he moved to Kathmandu and got involved in different activities of the party like the expansion of the party committees in the valley, developing party soldiers and mobilizing the cadres.

Leaving the Maoist Party

As the Maoist party came through several incidents like movement of 2006/2007 A.D. Peace Process of Maoist and Seven Parties, Detailed Peace Agreement, Maoist’s involvement in Interim Parliament and Interim Government, its true picture was being revealed before the nation and the people.

Money oriented and disruptive activities became its main political course. The party became totally polluted because of its leaders’ behavior of ignoring opposition and emerging the groups of selfish people. Thousands of injured and victims were sidelined and totally neglected. Maoist party there onward was in a diminishing and declining phase. Against this tendency, he along with other many youth cadres, put forward their disagreement directly and indirectly but it remained unheard. During this time Maoist leaders and their team of opportunists had already been corrupted due to the misuse of the power and authority. This was due to the result in the election of 2008 A.D., they had forgotten the history and the real ground. Slowly and gradually Maoist revolution started its downfall and turned out to be against their motto.

Joining CPN (UML)

The party leaders used the innocent and disciplined cadres as their personal army to get power and more opportunities. As a result Maoist Revolution went towards its termination and dissolution. And many cadres like him were accused of different falsities of going against party activities. This created insecurities among the cadres to remain in the party. It was his immediate need to protect his life and he decided to join the contemporary CPN (UML) Joins CPN ML[2] and he [https://www.kantipurdaily.com/40/2009/01/01/173074.html?fbclid=IwAR3ltOakvbN2Zz6WsrYyAQ9V1AunE1Vkam85yX7-78UjsxwgqYkMLGCNVUY joined this party formally with hundreds of party soldiers on 31st December 2008]. In this party, he worked as Bagmati Zone Committee Member and continued the discussion of his political and ideological thoughts always openly in the favor of Nepal and its people.[3]

Independent Politician

The second election for the constituent assembly that was held in 2013 A.D. showed the original position of Maoist party and that created a different ground reality for a different competitive political practice in Nepal. He found there was black market inside the red flag of CPN (UML) party so he could not stay with them and presented his resignation from all responsibilities and his party membership in the party headquarters on 2015 A.D. . After that he has remained free of any involvement in political parties. But he has been active in his political thoughts and behaviors. Now, he is thinking of getting involved in a democratic party that believes in peace and prosperity of the people and the nation. He wants to live the rest of his life with complete dedication to serve the people and the nation. He is determined to use his positive thought, belief and experience to build and contribute something to the nation through party.

Candidate for the house of representatives

Pun ran for 2018 election for the House of Representatives for CPN (ML), (Party General Secretary of C.P. Mainali), against Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat (NC), Ishwor Pokharel CPN(UML) (elected candidate) and Ujjwal Thapa (Bibeksheel Sajha Party) to name a few.[4]

Involvement in Social Organization

Pun has been an active member of various social organization. As per the decision of cabinet meeting of Nepal government (P.M. Madhav Kumar Nepal) held on 28th February 2010, he was appointed as a member of committee for collecting data of ex-Maoist soldiers under the then Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction (Nepal). He is the General Secretary [https://bprfnepal.org/en/team-english/ Buddhist People’s Rights Forum (BPRF)], [5]Nepal since its establishment on the 24th January 2014. He has also been working as the Vice President of Anti Corruption Public Forum of Nepal. Similarly, he is the President of Foundation of Social Transformation and Rural Development (FOSTARD). He is also the advisor of Shangharam Vihara, Dhalku, Kathmandu.

Political Mission

The political vision of Nepal is diverted and that’s why people are frustrated; this has made people not trust politics. Today, communist parties have made politics as the means to fulfill personal goals and desires. The country’s genuine problem like poverty, illiteracy, dependency and such aren't addressed; rather such problems are addressed by the communist parties and political institutions as commercial industries. They are against human feelings and sentiments. In the name of politics different illegal criminal looting and bribery are increasing day by day. This has increased hatred for politics in general public opinion. He says, "it's true that without true politics we can’t run the nation properly nor can we bring the expected social, economic and cultural change."

Politics has become an easy way to the fulfill short term benefits for the political leaders of Nepal. To seriously bring about the needed change in current political system and our lifestyle in relation to national development is the major questions now. To direct our socio-economic and cultural development has been another equally important question today. He says for this to happen, we have to commit ourselves to improve politics, and to return the grip of the nation, to the people, by the people and for the people.

Another political mission should be to make the people, politically conscious and socially responsible across the nation. He wants to further his political career with this high spirit, and dedicate the rest of his life to the welfare of the party, the country and the people.
