释义 |
Der Krieg is a collection of 51 prints by Otto Dix in 1924[1]. This collection is one of his more notable anti-war pieces, completed shortly after World War I, and was inspired by his experiences there. The prints are currently part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s online collection[2].
BackgroundDix was born the eldest son of Franz and Louise Dix[3]. Although Dix’s parents did not have artistic professions, his Father working in an iron foundry and his mother working as a seamstress[3], he was exposed to art from a very young age as he spent much time in his cousins art studio[3]. As a result from painting with his cousin, he became quite skilled and he took an apprenticeship with the landscape painter Carl Senff. He soon began to paint landscapes of his own. In 1910, his apprenticeship was finished and he moved to Dresden to attend the Saxon School of Arts and Crafts[3]. It was here that Dix came into contact with the some his greatest sources of inspirations such as Goethe and Nietzsche[3]. He volunteered for the German army to fight in World War I, and after one year of training in Dresden, he was sent to fight mainly on the Western Front, but also fought on the Eastern Front for a short time[4]. Towards the end of the war he was injured, and when he healed quickly he became a certified pilot. After WWI, Dix came home to Dresden and helped found the Dresdner Sezession, an experimental art group. He eventually started painting anti-war art such as his widely known painting, The Trench, and then only a year later created these fifty Der Krieg prints. DescriptionThe prints depict the various scenes from the trenches and other parts of WWI as Otto experienced them.
