The Development and Wellbeing Assessment (DAWBA) is an online measure for children and adolescents ages 2 through 17 years old, developed by United Kingdom child psychiatrist Robert N. Goodman. The DAWBA is designed to generate ICD-10 and DSM-IV or DSM-5 psychiatric diagnoses, including the common emotional, behavioural and hyperactivity disorders. It has been translated into numerous languages, including Spanish, Korean, Russian, and Portuguese and has evidence of satisfactory validity.^[1]^[2]^[3]

Administration

Information is collected from up to three sources: the parent, the teacher and the youth themselves if aged over 10 years. The DAWBA can be administered face-to-face, by telephone or online by people with minimal training. It involves a mixture of closed questions e.g. "Does he ever worry?" and open-ended questions e.g. "Please describe in your own words what it is that he worries about?". In a community sample, the parent interview takes approximately 50 minutes to administer, the youth interview 30 minutes and the teacher questionnaire around 10-15 minutes, the most complex cases can take up to 2 hours. At the end of the interview a computerised summary is generated and a clinical rater uses this to list the likely diagnosis or diagnoses.

Uses

The DAWBA has been used in the Office of National Statistics surveys of child and adolescent mental health^[4] and is being piloted in Scotland and Finland to determine its utility in aiding referral from Primary care for children and young people with potential mental health problems^[5]
