The organization has continued to grow and is now internationally recognized. The DI now hosts various programs and trainings.

History

The Journal of Ecumenical Studies was founded in 1964 by Leonard and Arlene Swidler as the first peer reviewed academic journal with its focus mainly on ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue. The journal grew to focus on the discussion between all major religious groups. In 1978 the founders decided to expand their vision to form the Institute for Interreligious, Intercultural Dialogue. This new entity focused on bringing together religious thinkers to conferences where they could express and discuss their varying ideas of faith. This new organization would eventually evolve into the DI. The modern day institute functions as the outreach arm for

Current Programs

Dialogue training

The DI offers training in their methods of dialogue. Leonard Swidler has taught dialogue as a means of communication at Temple University for multiple decades. The Dialogue Institute has expanded on his teachings to create a fully customizable program that can adapt the methodologies of dialogue to any situation or organization looking for training. These trainings are meant to help educate groups on how to address issues moving forward in a healthy and constructive way.

SUSI

The DI has been a host of [https://exchanges.state.gov/non-us/program/study-us-institutes Study of the U.S. Institutes] programs since 2010. Their particular area of focus is religious pluralism. These programs, offered by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, are offered to international students and scholars and allow them an opportunity to come visit the United States and study a specific topic. Considering their roots as a religious organization, the DI specializes in teaching about the various religious groups and how they are represented in the United States.

Bumuntu Peace Institute

Started in 2010 the Bumuntu Peace Institute is an extension of the DI focused on helping children in The Democratic Republic of the Congo through the use of dialogue, education, and aid in building a sustainable environment for the future.
