Diane Margaret Maclagan (born 1974)^[1] is an associate professor (reader) of mathematics at the University of Warwick.^[2] She is a researcher in combinatorial and computational commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, with an emphasis on toric varieties, Hilbert schemes, and tropical geometry.

Education and career

As an undergraduate, Maclagan studied at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, graduating in 1995.^[3] She competed in the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1990 and 1991, earning a bronze medal in 1991.^[4] She did her PhD at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 2000. Her dissertation, Structures on Sets of Monomial Ideals, was supervised by Bernd Sturmfels.^[3]^[5]

After postdoctoral research at the Institute for Advanced Study, Maclagan was a Szegő Assistant Professor at Stanford University from 2001 to 2004, an assistant professor at Rutgers University from 2004 to 2007, then an associate professor there from 2007 to 2009. She moved to her present position at the University of Warwick in 2007.^[3] She has graduated six Ph.D. students since 2010.^[5]

Maclagan has held visiting appointments at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton,^[6] Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Berkeley,^[7] and Max Planck Institute für Mathematik in Leipzig.^[8] Her research has been funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)^[9] and the National Science Foundation (NSF).^[10] She has co-organized thematic programs at the Fields Institute in Toronto through the Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI)^[11]^[12] in addition to workshops at the American Institute of Mathematics (AIM) in Palo Alto,^[13] Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (MFO),^[14]^[15] and University of Oregon in Eugene.^[16]

Books

With Bernd Sturmfels, Maclagan is the author of the book Introduction to Tropical Geometry (Graduate Studies in Mathematics 161, American Mathematical Society, 2015).^[17] She co-edited Tropical geometry and integrable systems. Proceedings of the conference held at the University of Glasgow, Glasgow, July 3–8, 2011 with Chris Athorne and Ian Strachan (Contemporary Mathematics, 580.
