Dikkie Scipio (born in 1964 in Utrecht) is architect and founding partner of KAAN Architecten, founded in Rotterdam in 2014 together with Kees Kaan and Vincent Panhuysen. She previously was associated partner at Claus en Kaan Architecten.

Scipio is an advocate toward the importance of understanding the process of building. She has great admiration and respect for craftsmanship, an attitude that must not be misunderstood by being conservative. Dikkie believes in the quality for all; showing curiosity and interest in new developments, and in the science, social, art and culture fields.

Education

Following a thorough exploration of various crafts like furniture design and carpentry, Scipio studied applied arts and interior design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and successively trained as an architect at the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture. Scipio’s training allows her to lead work, which ranges from large-scale master plans to furniture and interior design, from initial concept to execution. Complex projects of renovation and extension of classified monuments play a central role in her architectural practice. Dikkie Scipio additionally pursued diverse studies in management, journalism and writing.

Professional practice

Dikkie Scipio was founding partner of Inside Out, an office for stage design, furniture and interior design based Utrecht (from 1989 until 1994). She subsequently trained as interior architect at Jos de Vries studio and as an architect at Koen van Velsen and Lof & van Stigt Architecten. From 1991 until 1994 she additionally founded Gallery X in Amsterdam, a gallery for applied arts. She finally joins Claus en Kaan Architecten in 1995.

KAAN Architecten

Dikkie Scipio joined Claus en Kaan Architecten in 1995 and became partner in 2002. In 2014 she founded KAAN Architecten together with Kees Kaan and Vincent Panhuysen. Within KAAN Architecten, Dikkie Scipio is currently supervising a diverse range of projects, her main focus being on educational and cultural architectural projects as well as renovation and extension of classified monuments and heritage. Large scale projects she is managing are Museum Paleis Het Loo in Apeldoorn[1] and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp[2]. Selected completed projects by KAAN Architecten that she worked on are: Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d’Orsay, KAAN Architecten's office De Bank[3], Education Center Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, B30 – Bezuidenhoutseweg 30 and the Netherlands Forensic Institute both in The Hague.

Other activities

Outside her practice as associated partner at KAAN Architecten, Dikkie Scipio is also engaged in several other activities. She is board member of Fleur Groenendijk Foundation since 2014 and initiator of the architectural prize De Meester for young architecture graduates of the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture. Since 2018 she is member of the supervisory board of Nai010 Uitgevers/Publishers. She is an international lecturer and sits on various juries and boards, both in the Netherlands and abroad.

Dikkie Scipio contributed to various books and publications, to name a few: ‘Sculptures in the public space’ in the book Beelden by Siebe Thissen[4] (Jap Sam books, 2016), her monthly contributions on ZAAL Z[5] (edited by the Royal Museum of Fine Arts) and she has a regular column on Fleur Groenendijk Foundation online platform[6].
