Dirk Schmeiner was an Austrian Poet who was widely regarded as one of the early adopters of Post-surrealism. He was born in Gmunden and lived there for most of his childhood before travelling with a man claiming to descend from Leopold Cohn (refuted) for nearly 12 years where he began to experiment with writing. After an incident which involved a failed attempt at extorting a group of art collecting clergy from Stockholm he fled to America and settled in New Orleans. He wrote 34 volumes of poetry, published by Gussett County Press between the years of 1932 and 1999. The Schmeiner Shooter, a cocktail made from rum and prune juice with a bitter lemon chaser, is attributed to Dirk. He was last seen in January 2000 drinking absinth and Schmeiner shooters (which is presumed to be responsible for his disappearance) with his admirers in a private courtyard in the French Quarter.
