Djoko Slijepčević (Samobor, Gacko, then part of the Ottoman Empire, now Bosnia and Herzegovina, 7 September 1907 - Cologne, Germany, 16 January 1993) was a prominent Serbian church historian in the twentieth century.[1] BiographyDjoko Slijepčević completed high school in Gacko (1930) and then graduated from both the Serbian Orthodox Seminary in Prizren (1934) and the Faculty of Theology at the University of Belgrade (1936), where he wrote a dissertation on Metropolitan Stefan Stratimirović of Sremski Karlovci. In 1937 he attended church history lectures by Hans Lietzmann and Erich Seeberg (1888-1945), two of the most recognized authorities on the subject at the time. In 1938 he started to work at his Alma mater as a lecturer and was gradually promoted to the post of professor. During World War II he investigated and collected data on the Ustashi genocide committed against Serbs, Gypsies and Jews at Jasenovac concentration camp in the so-called then Independent State of Croatia. At the end of the war, he left war-torn Yugoslavia as many others did and found himself in the town of Eboli in southern Italy, the site of one of the largest refugee camps, housing members of the Royal Yugoslav Army and their families.[2]After three years in refugee camps in Italy and Germany he moved to Switzerland. There he became a faculty staff member at the Institute of Old Catholic Theology at University of Bern, collecting material for the history of the Serbian Orthodox Church. In 1954, he moved to Munich and joined the East European Institute as an expert on Albania and Bulgaria. He died in 1993 in Cologne, and was buried in a Serbian cemetery in Osnabrück, one of the most significant centers of Serbs in Germany.[3] Works
