Domuni University (Domuni Universitas) is an online university.^[1] Founded and administered by the Order of Preachers, Domuni has three faculties: philosophy, theology, and social sciences.

Although headquartered in Toulouse, the university has several offices, notably in Brussels, for general management; in Geneva ; in Bologna; in Madrid, for the Spanish-speaking directorate, or in Kigali for the Africa department.

The academic staff of the university consists of 250 professors, 80% of whom are Dominicans. Originally created in French (Domuni-FR), the university opened a Spanish-speaking section (Domuni-ES) in 2012, English-speaking (Domuni-EN) in 2013, Italian-speaking in 2017, and offers since 2014 courses in Arabic^[2]. More than forty nationalities are represented among the 2,500 students of the university.

History

Domuni University was founded in 1999 by the Dominicans of the Toulouse and France Provinces^[3]. The project was initiated by the Dominican brother Michel Van Aerde. After spending 5 years as the director of the Bartolomé Center of Las Casas in Peru^[4], this brother from the Toulouse Province saw the internet as a new tool to reach isolated communities and to transmit the Dominican intellectual heritage to the masses^[5]. The idea was thus born to create a fully online Dominican University, of which he is now the director general.

In 1999, the two Dominican provinces of Toulouse and France created Domuni as an association under the 1901 law. Marie Monnet joined the project in 2006 and became director of studies at the university in 2008^[6]. The establishment is declared a private higher education institution in accordance with the Rectorate of Toulouse.

In December 2010, an agreement with the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome (Angelicum) was signed^[7] allowing Domuni University to offer canonical degrees in Religious Sciences. An agreement with the University of Lorraine in April 2011^[8], and another with the Université Catholique de Louvain, in June 2017^[9], have allowed Domuni to propose State Bachelor's and Master's in Theology^[10], according to the European standards induced by the Bologna process (LMD).

In 2012, the university introduced a Spanish-speaking section, followed by English in 2013, Italian in 2017, and Arabic in 2018.

In 2018, the university was granted special consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council^[11].

Organization of studies

Moodle

Domuni University operates entirely online via the online education platform, Moodle. The scheme makes it possible to reach a wide audience, including students in isolated geographical areas far from university centers (30% students of African origin in 2009^[12]).

The studies are organized around:

• written content (downloadable courses in pdf format)

• active participation (online seminars, exchanges with teachers, forum between students).

• a supervised exam each semester, organized in one of the Dominican accredited examination centers, located in the geographical area of ​​each student.

Students have access to Dominican libraries around the world in addition to online university resources. Teachers and students can meet on the occasion of summer universities organized since 2009 (Angers^[13], Paris, Brittany^[14]), study sessions (Ecole biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem, 2017^[15]) or academic conferences (Salamanca in 2014, Paris La Sorbonne in 2016 and 2017^[16]). 

Admissions and courses

Registrations and validations do not follow the academic calendar, they depend on the organization of each student. The curriculum can start at any time during the year^[17] and its duration can be adapted to individual constraints.

Adapted pedagogy

The research professors at Domuni University have developed an expertise in distance higher education^[18][19][20]

Teaching and research

Training

Domuni University offers degree programs (both canonical and state diplomas) in theology, philosophy and social sciences. The institution also offers "à la carte" courses (600 courses downloadable in pdf).

Publishing house

In 2012, the university created Domuni-Press, an academic publishing house, which publishes the work of researchers through five collections (Bible, Theology, History, Spirituality, Society). On October 25, 2013, Domuni signed a co-publishing agreement with the University Presses of the Catholic Institute of Toulouse for some of their works.

Review

The Domuni research results twice a year in the publication of an issue of Telos, available in three languages (French, English, Spanish) in both digital and paper format.

Partnerships

Domuni is a partner of many research centers and participates in a wide international cooperation. Amongst its partners, one can find the Catholic Institute of Toulouse, Universidad Santo Tomas (Bogotá), Lumen Vitae. The university has a special relationship with the Angelicum of Rome, the University of Lorraine in France and the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium, with whom agreements establish mutual recognition of credits and diplomas.
