Early Life

Dorothy was born to Charles and Katharine Connor.[1] She graduated from Wellesley College in 1912. Sara Katharine Connor, an older sister and also a graduate of Wellesley College (1895),[2] married Dr. Howard Lowrie Fisher.[1]

Sinking of the Lusitania

After college Dorothy studied First Aid with an increasing interest in providing service and aid during the war in Europe. She was sailing to France as a passenger of the RMS Lusitania with her brother-in-law, Dr. Howard Fisher, with the intent of serving in an aid station or military hospital. When the Lusitania was torpedoed on May 7, Dorothy and her brother-in-law were two of the passengers who jumped over the rail of the sinking ship. Dorothy's account of the event states she was dragged down under the water and lost consciousness. However, her brother-in-law had given her a life belt before she left the ship. She was seen floating near other survivors who pulled her into a life boat while still unconscious. She regained consciousness before she and the others on the life boat were rescued by a minesweeper.[1]

Dorothy stayed in England until October, 1915, when she returned to the United States.[3]

France and World War I

Dorothy returned to Europe with her older sister Julia, Lady Reckit, in 1916 to work at a canteen. She also performed some hospital services. After the war the French government awarded her the Croix de Guerre.[3]

Later Life

She married Greene Williams Dugger, Jr., a 1914 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and a Commander in the United States Navy, in 1923.[4] Greene died in August, 1941 of an unknown illness contracted while the couple resided in Honolulu, Hawaii.[5]
