[https://www.eyesofthepot.com/acoma/dorothy_torivio.htm Dorothy Torivio] was born on August 19, 1946 in the Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico and died on April 20, 2011[1]. She was an American Indian potter who was best known for her ground breaking work in amplified [https://www.palmstrading.com/native-american-pottery/native-seed-pots/ seed-pots], which were pots traditionally used to store seeds[2]. Her signature style was black and white or polychrome patterns that were very complex and done freehand. She learned pottery from her mother and her daughter helped with gathering materials.

Her process involved: "She looks at a pot, visually divides it in half, then in quarters, then eighths, sixteenths, and more, and keeps dividing until there is no room on the surface. After the mental gymnastics, she begins to paint the pot...she paints in the negative, the opposite of the way our minds read it."[3]. She used a traditional yucca brush for painting. She was once quoted as saying, "my brain is my computer", after a mathematics professor had spent a considerable amount of time trying to use his computer to understand how she created her designs.[3]
