Double Eleven Shopping Festival (Chinese: 双十一购物狂欢节[1]), refers to the annual online promotional day on November 11th. November 11th is the fixed time for Tmall (also called Taobao) to hold large-scale promotional activities. Generally one month before the November 11th the Tmall begins to launch several activities to prepare for the shopping festival, such like encouraging consumers to create shopping teams to collect energy to exchange coupons, use Tmall points to exchange the shopping allowance, go to specific online stores every day to sign in to get coupons, etc. Consumers participate in these activities to obtain amount of Shopping allowances, coupons and "red envelopes (virtual cash available only for Double Eleventh Shopping Festival)" to use at the Double Eleven Shopping Festival. At that day consumers can get different degrees of discount when they buy goods which participate in the double eleven activity, the degree of discount depends on consumers' early efforts and business’ specific concessions.

Origin

Overwhelmed by the ecstasy of shopping, people now barely mention that the day is originated from a civil celebration of Singles' Day (the date 11.11 resembles four "bare sticks", the Chinese expression for the unattached). Alibaba firstly turned it into an online promotion day in 2009, and encouraged shoppers to pamper themselves.[2]

The trading volume has increased dramatically year by year, and the merchants involved in the activity have changed from the initial 27 brands in 2009 to 10000+ brands including not only Taobao merchants, but also Jingdong, Amazon and some other websites even some hypostatic stores.

It was reported by the abc News on Nov 10, 2017, that "For a few years now, Singles Day sales have far surpassed its U.S. counterparts of Black Friday and Cyber Monday -- combined[4]", which shows that the sales volume of Double Eleven Shopping Festival in China is so large through comparing with other shopping festivals.

Taobao is the largest network retail and business circle in the Asia Pacific region, founded by Alibaba group in May 2003. And Tmall, formerly known as Taobao mall, is a comprehensive shopping website. On the morning of January 11, 2012, Taobao mall officially announced its renaming to Tmall.[5][6]

What’s more, express business volume grew rapidly influenced by the Double Eleven Shopping Festival, which temporarily forms a supply shortage. The total number of Double Eleven businesses has increased year by year, bringing more opportunities for temporary employment. Generally speaking, the "Double Eleventh" has promoted the development of China's e-commerce industry and the transformation of Chinese people's consumption patterns. [7]
