Dr. Brent Reynolds is a neuroscientist.

Reynolds was an undergraduate at the University of Lethbridge, where he received a B.Sc. in Psychology. He then went on to obtain his Ph.D. in neuroscience at the University of Calgary. He also has a degree in Chinese medicine from the Canadian College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

Reynolds is primarily known for his finding of stem cells in the adult mammalian brain, a discovery that formed the basis of his Ph.D. thesis, “Stem Cells in the Mammalian CNS” while working with Dr. Samuel Weiss1,2. Reynolds is also known for his work on Eco-Oncology with University of Florida ecologist Dr. Madan Oli, where they have been applying the principle of ecological management of pests to the management of cancer3. More recently, in collaboration with University of Florida Professor Dr. Loic Deleyrolle, they have invented a poly molecular botanical compound called Epidiferphane™ (EDP™)4,5. EDP™ is currently being developed by Prana Therapeutics6.

Reynolds and Weiss were the first to isolate neural stem cells from the adult striatal tissue, including the adult subventricular zones - one of the neurogenic areas - of adult mice brain tissue1. Together, Reynolds and Weiss developed the Neurosphere Assay, a tissue culture method that has become the gold standard for isolation, expansion and quantification of neural stem cells7. Reynolds would later collaborate with Dr. Sharon Louis at STEMCELL Technologies to develop a collagen-based assay, called the Neural Colony-Forming Cell Assay for the quantification of neural stem cells. This assay allows discrimination between neural stem and progenitor cells8.

Dr. Reynolds is currently a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Florida9.
