Eau de Cologne is a magazine and an exhibition created by a group of female artists in the late 20th century. The magazine was originally created in the mid-1980s and it included works by Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Louise Lawler, Cindy Sherman, and Rosemarie Trockel.[1] The magazine was published in three different issues between 1985 and 1989 by Monika Sprüth.[1] These issues featured the art of the previously mentioned artists as well as portraits, conversations, interviews, and essays with many other female artists.

History

The Eau de cologne magazines began after the opening of Monika Sprüth's art gallery in Cologne in 1983.[1] Sprüth's gallery was based on the fundamental ideas and works of female artists.[2] Sprüth saw the opportunity to use this space as an instrument to inspire the celebration and promotion of female artists. She thought to further these feminist ideals by creating a magazine that could reach more of the population in a more accessible manner. The creation of the Eau de Cologne magazine saw the importance of female artists and their work becoming a more compelling issue within the mass media. It was stated that the Eau de Cologne magazine "gave artists such as Trockel, Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Cindy Sherman, Louise Lawler, and Jutta Koether a European venue to pursue their own self-making and critical empowerment".[3] The first two issues of the magazine were edited by Monika Sprüth while the last issue was edited by Jutta Koether and Karen Marta.[4]

Exhibition

The Eau de Cologne show was first exhibited at Monika Sprüth's Gallery in Cologne in 1985 just two years after the gallery opened. The second exhibition of the show was done in 1987 and a third was done in 1993. All of these were done at Monika Sprüth's Gallery in Cologne. More recently, there was an exhibit at the Sprüth Magers gallery in Berlin, Germany in 2015. This exhibition featured some new works ranging from the 1980s to 2015. This included some black and white photographs that Barbara Kruger had created for the cover of the magazine Dazed and Confused in 1996. This exhibition ran from September 17 to October 21, 2015.[5] Even more recently, the newly opened Sprüth Magers gallery in Los Angeles put on a retrospective exhibit of the Eau de Cologne show from June 28 to August 20, 2016.[1]

Artists Involved

The artists involved in creating these projects were all female and generally created very political work or pieces that included a strong cultural commentary.  Barbara Kruger is an American artist famous for her block style red captioned photographs.  She is said to use the “techniques of mass communication and advertising to explore gender and identity”.  A vast majority of her work draws attention to the ideas of feminism and consumerism by somewhat mocking the popular images of the time.  Jenny Holzer is also an American artist.  Her art is said to be neo-conceptual and follows an idea of how speech and concepts are produced in public spaces.  She is very famous for her public works entitled Truisms which date from 1977 to 1979.  Louise Lawler is an American artist as well whose work focuses on photographing other artist’s pieces from different perspectives to give unique attention to their methods or their use of space.  One of her main focuses is the intersection of art and commerce in galleries.  Cindy Sherman is an American artist from New Jersey who is best known for her conceptual portraits.  One of her most famous works is her “Complete Untitled Film Stills” series which includes 69 black and white photographs.  This series was intended to disrupt the stereotypes that were upheld of female artists in the media.  Sherman is seen as one of the biggest influences on contemporary portrait photographers.  Rosemarie Trockel is a German artist who works largely with clay in creating sculpture.  She also produces what are referred to as machine knitting paintings.  Monika Sprüth is a German art dealer and the co-owner of the Sprüth Magers gallery in Berlin.  She began her career as an artist and opened her first gallery in Cologne in 1983. Sprüth’s business partner, Philomene Magers, is also German.  Alongside Sprüth she is the co-owner of the Sprüth Magers gallery in Berlin.

Key Ideas

Some of the key ideas and motifs that went along with the Eau de Cologne magazine and exhibitions include the concept of political engagement.[6] The introduction of this kind of attention on female artists brought to light questions surrounding the female perspective in society.[7] The Eau de Cologne exhibitions and magazines also introduced an important discussion around the imbalance between female and male artists and how the Sprüth Magers gallery has been affected by these cultural ideals from the 1980s to today.[1]
