{{Short description|American painter}} Edward Delavan Nelson (January 29, 1821 – November1, 1871) was an American painter of the Hudson River School. Early lifeEdward Delavan Nelson was born on January 29, 1821 in New York City. He attended Columbia University and graduated in 1844. He was an original member of the Psi Upsilon Fraternity (Lambda Chapter) at Columbia University. He was a businessman and amateur painter until he became a student of Asher Brown Durand. Painting CareerIn the 1840-50s, Nelson became concentrated on landscape painting. He spent summers sketching in the Catskills, Adirondacks, White Mountains of New Hampshire and various other places making sketches and paintings of these different landscapes. He went on frequent sketching trips with Asher Brown Durand and other painters from the Hudson River School. Edward D. Nelson was a student and pupil of Asher Brown Durand. In fact, he was the only pupil that worked in Durand's studio. Nelson was a Member of the American Art Union, New York Historical Society and he received an honorary Academician Award in 1854 from the National Academy of Design. In addition to painting, Nelson was a respected businessman in New York City. He was one of the original founders of the Union Dime Savings Bank in addition to various other titles held with different banks and businesses. Nelson was killed on November 1, 1871 on the Harlem Railroad just after leaving his studio at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA).
