Elaine Agnew (born 1967) is a composer from Northern Ireland

Biography

Elaine Agnew was born in Larne, Co. Antrim. She studied music at Queen’s University Belfast and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.[1]

Commissions and performances

Agnew received a BBC Proms commission, Dark Hedges, for double orchestra and solo flute. The Ulster Youth Orchestra and the the Ulster Orchestra were accompanied by James Galway, conducted by JoAnn Falletta. Edward Whitney of Bachtrack" called it “compelling from beginning to end.”[2]

Her work has been commissioned and performed by many artists, including the Irish Chamber Orchestra, The Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and the RTÉ National Symphony and Concert Orchestras. Commercially released works include "Twilight" and "The Moon", performed by the Irish Chamber Orchestra and "Seagull" performed by the Irish pianist Isabelle O' Connell.[3]

In 2008 Agnew was named as RTÉ lyric fm Composer-in-Residence. Her works have been released on Lyric fm’s CD label.[4]

Educational work

Agnew is highly regarded as an animateur. She is highly experienced at engaging people of all ages in collective music-making and has directed many major education and community projects. Agnew works with the Music Network's CPD Programme.[3]

Awards

In 2008 Agnew received a Major Individual Arts Award from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. She has served residencies at the Banff Centre of Creative Arts, the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire, and the Tyrone Guthrie Centre. In 2015 she was elected to Aosdána.[5]
