Elaine Hsiao is a microbiologist and Assistant Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her research centers on the relationship of the human microbiome to human health with a focus on neurobiology and immunology.

Education & Early Career

Hsiao attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics in 2006. She then attended California Institute of Technology, where she received her PhD in Neurobiology under the mentorship of Paul Patterson. For her doctoral work, she used mice as a model organism to understand how a mother's immune system during pregnancy may affect her offspring's risk of schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders.[1] Previous work had shown that when a pregnant rodent's immune system is activated in response to a pathogen, or infectious agent, a molecular cascade is set in motion that results in schizophrenia- and autism-related behaviors in the offspring. The pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 6 (IL-6) plays a crucial role in mediating this chain of molecular events, so Hsiao set to understanding how IL-6 influences fetal development by focusing on the placenta of pregnant mice whose immune systems had been activated using a molecule that mimics a virus.[1] She found a link between IL-6 and disruption of pathways important for fetal development. In another study, Hsiao also studied how prenatal stressors, such as maternal infections, can affect brain development of the fetus.[2] Influenza in pregnant mice affected the gene expression of the fetal brain, which mirrored how environmental stresses during pregnancy can contribute to the risk of neurodevelopment disorders. She discussed the results of her work in her thesis, entitled Brain, gut and immune interactions in autism spectrum disorder, which was published in 2012.[3]

Research

Hsiao became an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2014 with the support of the National Institutes of Health Early Independence Award (DP5), which enables promising early career investigators to launch their own laboratories.[5]
