Professor Eli Carmeli (Hebrew: אלי כרמלי) is an Israeli physical therapist, researcher, scholar, and lecturer in the field of skeletal muscle changes in old age. He is the chairman of the physical therapy department at the University of Haifa.

Biography

Carmeli was born, raised and educated in Haifa. After completing his high school studies at Tichon Chadash, he volunteered to the Nahal as part of HaNoar HaOved VeHaLomed. He then joined the Israeli Deference Forces and completed an officers' course. Carmeli was one of the founders of Battalion 931 under the command of Lt. Col. Amos Tartman. In 1980, Carmeli graduated from the Wingate Institute of Physical Therapy at the Wingate Institute, and in 1993 he completed his doctoral studies at the Rappaport School of Medicine, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa. During his doctoral studies (1987-1993), Carmeli moved with his family to live on Degania Bet in the Jordan Valley and served as a physiotherapist for kibbutz members. Between 1985 and 1991 he taught anatomy at the Ohalo College. Carmeli completed his post-doctoral studies at the University of Florida. He was then appointed senior member of the physiotherapy department at Nova Southeastern University. Upon his return to Israel in 1998, he joined the physiotherapy department at Tel Aviv University, where he held several senior positions including the chairmanship of the department (2004-2008). In 2013, Carmeli moved to the University of Haifa, where he served as chairman of the Physical Therapy Masters Program (2013-2016). He has been chairman of the department of physical therapy since 2016.

As of 2012, Carmeli teaches a Psychomotor course in the special education track at Gordon Academic College.

Carmeli is married and has three children.

Professional activities outside the university

In addition to his academic activities at the university, Carmeli takes part in extra-curricular professional activities. He is a professional consultant to the Rehabilitation Department in several companies, including Meditac (development of a special feedback glove) and bioXtreme (development of a robot for the study of upper limb movement). Carmeli previously served as Chairman of the Committee for the Preparation of Licensing / Certification Tests for Physical Therapists and Chairman of the Biological Group of the Israel Gerontology Society and as Chairman of the Quality Control Committee of two Master Programs: at the University of Nicosia and at the Technion in Limassol (Cyprus). In addition, together with Yosefa Danziger, he served as a representative of the Ministry of Health and the Association for the Advancement of Physical Therapy at the World Assembly of Physical Therapy (WCPT) in Hungary, the physical Therapist of the Israeli delegation to the Special Olympics in Ireland in 2003, and in 2010 he joined an Israeli delegation of Magen David Adom to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Since 2013 he is part of the advising committee on Physical Therapy matters to the Health Ministry Health. Over the years Carmeli has been invited as guest lecturer to various international conferences around the world.

Membership in professional associations

Carmeli is a member of several professional associations, including the Israeli Society for the Study of Oxygen and Free Radicals, and the Israeli Association for the Advancement of Physical Therapy and also serves as chairman of the Israeli Association for Caregivers Israel[1].

Member of the editorial board of professional journals

Carmeli was the editor-in-chief of the Israeli Journal of Physical Therapy and a member of the editorial board of the Israeli Journal of Aging. Today, Carmeli serves as a member of the editorial board of various international journals including the Scientific World Journal, The International Journal of Therapy and Rehabilitation, Isokinetics and Exercise Science, Journal of Aging Science and Frontiers in Public Health.
