She is the founding director of the Irish Academy of Public Relations, a global communications training organisation. She is best known as the author of 'Public Relations a practical approach' (2003, 2007, 2018). Early and Personal lifeGunning was born in Dublin on 29 September 1957. She is the eldest of four children (two girls and two boys). Her father Michael Whelan worked in the Irish Glass Bottle Company and her mother ran their home. Ellen attended St. Mary's School in Haddington Road and later studied public relations with PRII and was named 'Student of the Year' in the first, ever, graduate class. She later took an MA in Communications and Cultural Studies at Dublin City University. She lives in Wicklow with her husband, the award-wining artist Tony Gunning. Business CareerIn 1985, Gunning formed the PR Consultancy Elton Communications, and created the Irish Academy of Public Relations in 1991. Media HQ named her as one of the top 5 women in media in Ireland. Gunning has written three books. 'Public Relations a practical approach' was first published as an Irish academic text by Gill and Macmillan (2003, 2007). Gunning has also written 'Capital Women of Influence'(Liffey Press, 2009). She blogs for Microsoft on PR issues. Gunning has presented the weekly Mediascope programme on Dublin City fm since 2007.
