Elly Zupko is a communications expert, and an equity, diversity & inclusivity activist from Maryland, USA. She advocates for girls and women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). In 2015, after a successful Kickstarter campaign for her "Women Are All Over It" t-shirt, also known as #ThatOtherShirt[1], Elly founded the non-profit, SMLX-Good[2]. The mandate of SMLX-Good is to support "education and activism across a spectrum of social causes, especially the promotion of inclusivity and access for all types of people"[3].

Context of the Kickstarter Campaign

The Women in STEM t-shirt, which features 50 notable women, historical and contemporary, was the direct result of the social media storm that erupted over the dress choice of Dr. Matt Taylor, Project Scientist of the European Space Agency's Rosetta Mission[4], during his appearance on a global television broadcast on Wednesday November 12th 2014[5], to explain the significance of the Philae Lander. For the first time in history, an observational instrument was successfully landed on a comet, and Matt Taylor was on hand to explain the science.

As Elly explained, during her October 2017 International Ada Lovelace Day lectures at York University, the University of Toronto, and Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada: "Dr. Taylor has a playful aesthetic". However, Matt Taylor's choice of shirt, a custom-designed Hawaiian fabric featuring scantily-clad women, recalling Jane Fonda in Barbarella (film), was widely criticized by many members of the viewing audience tuning in to this historic event, which included many school children.

Elly garnered international media and social media attention for her response to Dr. Taylor's shirt. She tweeted a photoshopped version of his Hawaiian shirt that she covered with the heads of notable women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics[6].

Elly went on to launch a successful Kickstarter project to raise funds to design and manufacture her photoshopped t-shirt. The project raised over USD$33,000. The t-shirt, in addition to fabric, is accompanied by a poster and booklet with biographies of the featured women in STEM.

Hillary Clinton retweets Elly Zupko's 2016 tweet

Elly's 2014 viral tweet with a photoshopped shirt, was followed by second viral tweet about girls in STEM, in 2017:{{Cite tweet |user=SMLXist |author=You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch |number=564068436633214977 |date = 6 March 2017 |title=My fourth grade teacher friend found this under one of her students' desks. <3 <3 <3}}

International Ada Lovelace Day speaker invitations in Toronto, Canada in October 2017

In 2016, York University's Dawn Bazely (a University Professor), science and engineering librarian John Dupuis[8] who supported Elly's Kickstarter Campaign, along with colleagues, Marisa Sterling, Assistant Dean, Inclusivity and Diversity at Lassonde School of Engineering Professors Imogen Coe, then, science dean at Ryerson University, and Maydianne Andrade, Vice-Dean of Faculty Affairs and Equity[9], at the University of Toronto Scarborough, collaborated to invite Elly to give Ada Lovelace Day Lectures at the three respective Toronto institutions.
