The Elmwood Bender is a charitable event occurring in Buffalo, NY on the Saturday prior to Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States. The event was first organized in 1999 by the Loyal Order of the HDD to provide support to struggling businesses along the long vibrant Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo. This is the preeminent event of a number of charitable and social events the group plans in the area, including contributing to the Bornhava Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities. The event takes the form of a walk that begins at the corner of Elmwood Ave. and Forest Ave. and progresses along Elmwood to Allen St. The event originally terminated at Chippewa St. However in more recent years it was decided to focus on establishments more distant from the city center. 2019 is the 21st year of the event and according to organization reports, it is estimated that the event has contributed over $50,000 to area businesses.
