’eSIM’ stands for Embedded-SIM which means that the SIM card is already integrated into the device, it cannot be removed from the device. It is also called an eUICC (Embedded Universal Circuit Card). They can be connected, managed and even controlled remotely. eSIM needs to be supported by the network or carrier and it should be enabled by them. The idea of eSIM is to sign a contract with the carrier and then scanning in the relevant SIM code via the smartphone and from there a person can activate all additional internet enabled products such as tablets, smart watches, and cars.

  • eSIM has been introduced to counter the challenges arising from the SIM card in the M2M market and accordingly GSMA has drafted a technical specification
  • In December 2013, GSMA published Embedded SIM Remote Provisioning Architecture 1.1 [1]
  • This has paved the way to move from traditional SIM approach to eSIM approach
  • The GSMA embedded SIM specification is expected to enable and drive new product segment with a global reach

With the increase in the penetration of internet, coupled with the rising adoption of IoT across verticals such as automotive, consumer electronics, energy and utilities, manufacturing, retail, and transportation and logistics, is primarly driving eSIM adoption. In addition, favorable regulatory frameworks are facilitating the growth of M2M across verticals. eSIM is now a mainstream technology in the M2M application. It plays a pivotal role in this application owing to its remote programmability and high security.
