Embibe is the online brand name for Indiavidual Learning Private Limited – the largest Artificial Intelligence-based edtech (educational technology) company in India. It was founded by Aditi Avasthi in 2012 in Mumbai with the aim of disrupting education in India - democratizing education and providing personalized guidance to students. Initially, Embibe catered to students preparing for competitive engineering and medical entrance exams, like JEE Main, JEE Advanced and NEET. Currently, it is based in Bangalore and is catering to not only engineering and medical entrance exams but also various other exams for government jobs.

Embibe uses Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence to provide personalized guidance to the students. Using AI-powered technology, it helps students dive deep into not only their academic weaknesses and knowledge gaps but also their behavioural and test-taking skills, and helps in their overall improvement.

Acquisitions and Investments

In 2014, Embibe raised $4 million from Kalaari Capital ^[1]and venture fund, Lightbox. The fund was used to expand the company’s reach by getting more exams on to the e-learning platform, enhancing the teacher-student network, and conducting more research on Artificial Intelligence for education.

In April 2018, Reliance announced strategic investment of $180 million ^[2]and acquired almost 73 percent stake in the company. With this acquisition, Embibe is all set to become a global AI-based company for education .

Product and Services

Embibe operates on a freemium business model wherein all its content (study material, practice questions, mock test series, etc.) are provided free of cost. It charges only for various score improvement packs and AI-based personalized guidance.

As per researches conducted by Embibe, a student’s score in an exam depends upon two factors – his academic knowledge forms 61 percent of the score while his test-taking skills, like time management, question selection, etc. forms the remaining 39 percent. Traditional, offline coaching institutes and even other e-learning platforms focus mainly on improving the students’ academic knowledge. They provide students with study material, practice questions, mock test series, etc. and charge them for the same.

Embibe, on the other hand, provides all these resources for free. It, however, charges for personalized score improvement resources and plan that focuses on both the aspects that form a students’ score. Currently, Embibe has two paid products – JUMP and RANKUP.

Awards and Recognition

For her contribution in the field of education, Aditi Avasthi was listed in BBC 100 Most Influential Women In The World 2017 ^[3]and “40 under 40” by Fortune magazine. She also won the Digital Women Award in the Disruptor Category for Maximum Business Impact.
