The EMD SD45-3 is a upgraded SD45-2, only one example exist and it was built by Western Rail Switching.

There is currently only one SD45-3 in existence, it is owned by Everywhere West Leasing (EWLX) and operated by the Eastern Washington Gateway Railroad. In April of 2018 EWLX 329 was sent to Western Rail Inc to be upgraded to a SD45-3. It was originally built in March, 1967 as a EMD SD45R for the Southern Pacific Railroad (numbered SP 7558). When the SP went defunct the locomotive went to Montana Rail Link and was rebuilt and renumbered. It was rebuilt as a SD45 and renumbered MRL 329. Eventually 329 was sold to EWLX and rebuilt as a SD45-2. In 2018 EWLX decided that they wanted to upgrade the locomotive again before further use on the EWG. It was upgraded in April of 2018 as a SD45-3.
