Engel Leonardo

Baní, Dominican Republic in 1977. A graduate of the Faculty of Arts of Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo with complementary studies in the Altos de Chavón School of Design (affiliated to the Parsons School of Design in NY). Working with various media like sculpture, installation, site-specific interventions and ready-mades, addresses issues related to climate, nature, traditional crafts, architecture and popular culture of the Caribbean. His work has particular interest in objects, their gestures, creation and production processes, as well as its psychological and sociological implicit discourse. Engel Leonardo works from constant processes of research and observation of his environment. From the city of Santo Domingo, where he lives and works, to the peripheral urban and remote rural communities of the island visited in his multiple trips, making his life experience close to his artistic practice.

Texts by Regina Galindo and Emiliano Valdés[edit source | edit]

When I think of the Caribbean I think of the unrelenting Sun, of the great waves of people, of the large parties that suddenly come together, of excess. Excess of blue skies, excess of light, excess of heat, excess of air conditioning, excess of humidity, excess of green landscapes, excess of rain, excess of mosquitoes, excess of potholes, excess of SUV’s, excess of colmados, excess of share taxis, excess of moto taxis, excess of salami, excess of empanadas, excess of frying, excess of fried chicken, excess of rum, excess of beer, excess of hangover helpers, excess of fierce women, excess of handsome guys, excess of beaches that take your breath away, excess of coconuts, excess of coconut candy sticks, excess of ripe fruit. Excess of Russians in Punta Cana, excess of police extortion, excess of racism, excess of lawsuits, excess of decibels, excess of bachata, excess of merengue, excess of dembow. Excess of music everywhere, excess of parties everywhere, excess of friends everywhere, excess of happiness everywhere. […] Therefore, it seems a great and surprising contradiction to encounter the work of Engel Leonardo years later. His projects are exquisitely conceived by the spirit of the tropics, they are imminently Caribbean, they exude it, and yet are anything but excessive. They are like that other side of the Caribbean, calm, moderate, precise. Like small visual poems […] where nothing is lacking and nothing is superfluous.

Regina Galindo

Excerpt from exhibition text: Rejas, sillas, vestidos, muñecas y plátano (2014)
