Founded in 2002, the Engelstad Foundation was established to continue the philanthropic efforts of Ralph Engelstad. It was originally developed with the purpose of promoting medical research, improving the lives of people living with disabilities and creating new possibilities for high-risk individuals. The Engelstad Foundation focuses its efforts on education, healthcare, disabled individuals and childhood issues, among other areas[1]. The foundation controls about $800 million in assets and has given hundreds of millions in grants, scholarships and donations to a number of nonprofits and partners throughout the United States[2].

History

In 1979, Ralph Engelstad opened the Imperial Palace, where he received attention for hiring disabled individuals, which was rare at the time[3]. The Engelstad family continued quietly donating to charities and institutions in communities they had connections to. In 2002, Ralph and Betty Engelstad officially formed the Engelstad Foundation with the goal of continuing Ralph’s charitable work[4].

Leadership

The Engelstad Foundation is currently run by trustees Betty Engelstad, Kris Engelstad McGarry and Jeffrey M. Cooper[5].

Markets

Since 2002, the Engelstad Foundation has provided more than $300 million in grants to organizations spanning the states of North Dakota, Nevada, Minnesota, Utah and Mississippi[6]. The Engelstad family has history in the markets that the foundation serves. For example, the foundation holds strong ties to Thief River Falls, Minnesota, where Ralph Engelstad was born[7]. There is a strong presence in North Dakota as well – where Ralph Engelstad graduated from the University of North Dakota and met his wife, Betty, during his time in Grand Forks[8]. The foundation is currently based in Las Vegas, Nevada, where Ralph Engelstad built his business as an entrepreneur and where the Engelstad family has lived for many years[9].

Philanthropy

Donations to organizations focus on various categories including animal compassion, at-risk individuals, education, historical preservation, medical research and support, people with disabilities and veterans[10].

Notable donations to organizations within the various areas that the foundation serves include:

Animal Compassion

  • $4.5 million to The Animal Foundation to build the Engelstad Adoption Center and renovate the Lied Animal Shelter in Las Vegas (2015) [11]

At-Risk Individuals

  • $3 million to Grand Forks’ Community Violence Intervention Center benefitting its Safer Tomorrow Road Maps program (2018)[12] 
  • $3.7 million to Legal Aide Center of Southern Nevada in support of its endowment with the goal of sustaining and expanding legal offerings (2017)[13]
  • $10 million to Three Square Food Bank’s endowment in Las Vegas (2015)[14]
  • $2.6 million to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children in Boulder City, Nevada to help renovate the existing campus (2014)[15]
  • $2 million to support a public school-based community program created by the Latin Chamber of Commerce and Boys Town Nevada (2013)[16]

Education

  • $2.5 million to help build UNLV’s hospitality school (2018)[17] 
  • $10 million to the Roseman University College of Medicine in Las Vegas to open medical school (2017)[18]
  • $10 million to The Fulfillment Fund Las Vegas to provide area high school students with the necessary support to go on to college (2015)[19]
  • $100 million to the University of North Dakota to build Ralph Engelstad Arena (2013)[20]
  • $12.6 million to support student scholarships at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (2009)[21] 
  • $8.2 million to the College of Southern Nevada Foundation in Las Vegas to improve school’s health sciences program (2008)[22]
  • $20 million endowment to the University of North Dakota (2007)[23]

Historical Preservation

  • Contribution of $1.1 million to the Thief River Falls Restoration project that aimed to restore the Carnegie Library (2012)[24]

Medical Research and Support

  • $10 million gift to the St. Rose Dominican Health Foundation in support of an early support breast cancer program (2018)[25] 
  • $20 million gift to the Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas to support construction of a new research facility, the Ralph and Betty Engelstad Cancer Research Building (2008)[26]

  • $3 million to the Blind Center of Nevada to help build its Visions of Greatness Center (2018)[27]
