Eric Westervelt is an award winning American broadcast and digital journalist for NPR News, currently serving as a Correspondent on the network’s national desk and as a guest host for NPR’s news shows including Weekend Edition, Here and Now and others. His coverage of major foreign and domestic news have earned him broadcasting’s highest honors including the George Foster Peabody Award, the Alfred I. DuPont - Columbia University Award, the Edward R. Murrow Award and the Overseas Press Club Award. Westervelt spent a decade as a foreign correspondent for NPR serving as bureau chief and reporter in Jerusalem, Berlin, Baghdad and elsewhere between 2002 and 2012. He has covered multiple armed conflicts including the invasion of Iraq, the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, the occupation of Iraq and its bloody aftermath; the war in Afghanistan; North Africa's revolutions in Libya, Tunisia and Egypt including the fall of Hosni Mubarak. He also covered multiple conflicts and news out of Israel, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip as well as 2006’s Israel - Hezbollah War. He joined NPR’s national desk in 1996 covering a range of major national stories including the Columbine school massacre, the explosion of TWA flight 800, and the 2000 Florida presidential recount, among others. After receiving a 2013 John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship at Stanford University, he helped NPR build and launch its multimedia education news platform NPR Ed. CareerPrior to joining NPR, Westervelt freelanced for several news outlets including MonitoRadio, the national broadcast edition of the Christian Science Monitor, Reuters News, and the environmental news show Living on Earth, among other outlets. He also served as news director and a reporter/host at New Hampshire Public Radio and as a reporter in Oregon for KOPB in Portland.
