Eugene Coard is a retired Drag Racer who served as crew chief and one of the owners of the Mutt Brothers Racing Team out of Brooklyn, New York, that owned the Pro Stock cars driven by Ronald Lyles. The Mutt Brothers competed in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), International Hot Rod Association (IHRA), and with the United States Racing Team.

The Mutt Brothers (Eugene Coard, Ronald Lyles, John Lyles, Bennie Dunham and Jesse Johnson) were widely regarded as the greatest African-American Pro Stock Team to race professionally. They competed in Pro Stock races all over the country including NHRA, The U.S. Nationals, The National Challenge Race, the Professional Racer Association (PRA) and today Eugene is regarded by many as the African American Godfather of New York City Street Racing in the 60s and 70s.

Eugene and The MUTT BROTHER were the first and only African Americans to be members of the elite United States Racing team in 1972.  This team consisted of the of 16 fastest Pro Stock cars in the United States.

Eugene Coard was born on August 21, 1939 Williamsburg County, Kingstree, South Carolina. USA.

Eugene Coard grew up during Great Migration, when African Americans left the south for better living and working conditions. While his parents migrated to New York City, Eugene Coard was left behind in South Carolina to be raised by his grand parents.

Back in the day, for the poor farm boy in the South, dreams were limited by a number of circumstances such Racial Segregation, economic barriers, Jim Crow Laws, Academic status etc.

For those who dare to dream big and beyond the realm of their reality was an honorable merit for those who dare.

Imagine being a little boy of the descendent of slaves, growing up during the period of segregation in the land where it was known as heaven on earth, but the separation between reality and dream is divided by race and status. But growing up in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, he was exposed to racing but at the time racing was not meant to be for those without sufficient funding but for those who had money and privilege. However, racing was always Eugene’s dream.

Because of the Great Migration Eugene was granted the great opportunity to be reunited with his parent in New York City where Eugene could pursue his big dream of racing cars.

After moving to Brooklyn, New York he had the opportunity to pursue his greatest passion racing.

In many occasion in Mutt Brother racing career they were offer financial reward for giving up their winning to other folk.  But Mutt Brother always stood their ground to protect the antiquity of their sportsmanship.  

The key to Eugene Coard and The Mutt Brother’s success was their innovation, ingenuity and having faith in brotherhood.  

Eugene Coard, First African American Drag racer who made the US National Racing team in 1972.  Eugene Coard was inducted into Hall of Fame in 2010.  Best known for his involvement in drag racing for PRO STOCK car racing.

Eugene Coard is regarded as a pioneer and one of the most significant African Americans in Pro Stock drag racing. Eugene Coard and The MUTT BROTHERS spent over five (5) decades in car racing sport he led The MUTT BROTHERS to win a total of _________.

His persistent innovative racing style earn him a nicknames “____________”

In 1990 his beloved driver/friend/teammate Ronald Lyles passed away, Eugene Coard and  The MUTT BROTHER racing career came to a final stop.

In January 2010 Eugene Coard the only living legend of The MUTT BROTHER was inducted into the HALL OF FAME.
